NCAA Game Summary - Virginia Commonwealth vs. Wake Forest

Raleigh, NC (Basketball News) - Jamaal Levy scored the go-ahead basket with just over a minute remaining and finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds to lead Wake Forest to a 79-78 victory over Virginia Commonwealth in a first round NCAA Tournament game in the East Rutherford regional bracket.

Chris Paul scored 22 points and dished out seven assists for the Demon Deacons (20-9), who advanced to a second round game against 12-seeded Manhattan. Justin Gray chipped in 15 points in the win.

Domonic Jones scored 22 points to lead the Rams (23-8). Nick George contributed 16 points and Michael Doles had 15 in defeat.

George completed a three-point play to give VCU a 63-57 advantage with 7:49 to play before Wake Forest rallied.

The Demon Deacons responded with a 10-point run to take its first lead of the second half. Gray, Taron Downey and Levy each hit from beyond the arc during the spurt that gave the Deacons a 67-63 lead with just over five minutes to go.

Jones continued to carry the Rams, hitting a three-pointer to put VCU back in front, 68-67 and then tying the game at 71-71 with a trey from the top of the arc with 2:32 remaining in the second half.

Jones drove inside for a basket to give the Rams a 73-72 with just under two minutes left.

Levy made 1-of-2 from the free throw line with 1:40 left to tie the game and after Walker’s shot rimmed out for VCU, Levy took a dish from Paul and dunked to give Wake Forest a 75-73 lead with 1:04 to go.
