NBA Game Summary - Detroit at New Jersey

02.1.2006

East Rutherford, NJ (Basketball News) - Jason Kidd had 23 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists as the New Jersey Nets cooled off the Detroit Pistons with a 91-84 victory at Continental Airlines Arena.

Nenad Krstic and Richard Jefferson donated 19 points and six rebounds apiece while Vince Carter chipped in 17 points and eight rebounds for the Nets, who snapped a four-game slide.

Chauncey Billups led all scorers with 30 points and Richard Hamilton added 19 points, seven rebounds and six assists for Detroit, which had an 11-game winning streak halted.

"We stayed in the game because of Chauncey and Rip (Hamilton)," said Pistons head coach Flip Saunders.

Kidd sank a jumper with 8:11 remaining in the third quarter to give the Nets the lead for good at 52-51 and jumpstart a 15-4 surge.

The Pistons, however, would make it close down the stretch.

Hamilton’s jump shot with one second left in the third made it 67-62, and Detroit kept within striking distance throughout the fourth quarter. Then, with 1:44 to play, Billups hit a shot that cut the Pistons’ deficit to 85-84.

Kidd came down the other end and promptly drained a three-pointer from the top of the arc, however, to push New Jersey’s lead back to four points.

"I don’t shy away from it," Kidd said.

"We got stops and made baskets when we had to."

Hamilton was stripped by Carter on Detroit’s next possession and Kidd picked up the loose ball, was fouled and made the ensuing free throws with 36 seconds remaining to close out the game.

The Nets held Detroit to just 37.2 percent shooting in the first half en route to assuming a 46-42 lead.

Krstic had 13 points through 24 minutes while Jefferson had 10 for New Jersey, including a finger roll with 32 seconds left to make it a four-point game.

A win Tuesday would have given Detroit its first 12-game winning streak since matching a team record by winning 13 straight from December 27, 2003-January 19, 2004...New Jersey is 13-6 in its arena...The Pistons have still won three of their last five and eight of 12 in the Garden State.
