NBA Game Summary - Indiana at Chicago

01.14.2006

Chicago, IL (Basketball News) - Anthony Johnson scored the game-winning basket with 3.9 seconds left in the fourth quarter and Ben Gordon’s last-second shot came just after the buzzer sounded, as Indiana edged Chicago, 91-89, at the United Center.

Stephen Jackson scored 29 points while Jermaine O’Neal, Austin Croshere and Jeff Foster all added 12 for the Pacers, who have won three of their last four games. Johnson finished with 10 points.

Andres Nocioni had 15 points and eight rebounds while Darius Songaila added 14 points for the Bulls, who have dropped two straight following a three-game winning streak. Gordon posted 13 points and Luol Deng contributed 12 points and seven boards in the loss.

Indiana led 71-68 after three periods and widened the gap to seven points on Danny Granger’s basket with around three minutes left in the game.

Nocioni, though, pulled Chicago within 86-82 as he converted a three-point play with 2:14 to go and the deficit was then reduced to three points on Gordon’s basket moments later.

The Bulls then tied the game at 89 apiece on Kirk Hinrich’s two free throws with 18 seconds left, but the Pacers had one final answer.

Johnson converted an acrobatic shot over his head and was fouled on the play with 3.9 seconds left. The guard, though, missed the foul shot and Deng grabbed the rebound before calling timeout for one final play.

Gordon received the inbounds pass and quickly drove the lane where he threw up a runner that dropped through the hoop, but it was ruled to have come after the final horn sounded. After an extensive video replay, it was confirmed that the shot did come too late and the basket was no good.

Chicago got off to a fast start as Deng’s basket with around 4 1/2 minutes remaining in the first quarter gave the Bulls a 20-11 lead. Gordon’s free throw moments later made it an 11-point game and Chicago eventually led 32-20 after one period.

The Bulls held a 51-43 edge at halftime, but Indiana rallied in the third.

Johnson’s basket midway through the period brought the Pacers within 58-57 and the Pacers grabbed a four-point lead moments later when Jackson converted a three-point play. Indiana enjoyed a 71-68 edge after 36 minutes.

Jackson made 11-of-13 foul shots...Indiana ended 30-of-39 from the charity stripe, while Chicago was 15-of-20...The home team in this series had won 11 of the last 12 meetings prior to this game...The Pacers snapped a two-game losing streak in Chicago...O’Neal left in the second quarter with a sprained ankle and did not return.
