Atlanta, GA (Basketball News) - Elton Brand had 23 points and seven rebounds to lead the Los Angeles Clippers over the Atlanta Hawks, 102-95, at Philips Arena.
Sam Cassell added 21 points, nine assists and eight rebounds for the Clippers, who have won two straight and five of their six games this season. The Clippers’ franchise, dating back to the days when they were the Buffalo Braves (1970-78) and the San Diego Clippers (1978-84) before coming to LA, started the season 5-1 just once in 1985-86 when they won five in a row to start the year only to lose their next eight contests.
Corey Maggette recorded 17 points for Los Angeles, which has won six straight against Atlanta, including a series sweep this year.
Joe Johnson had 24 points and 10 rebounds for the Hawks, who are winless in five games this season. Zaza Pachulia added 16 points, 13 rebounds and six assists for Atlanta, which had dropped a 92-77 decision to the Clippers in LA on November 4.
After rookie Marvin Williams drew the Hawks within 66-64 with a three-point play with just over 5:21 left in the third quarter, the Clippers answered with a 15-5 burst that bridged the third and fourth quarter to begin to pull away.
Cuttino Mobley started the burst with a three-pointer and Maggette finished it with a three-point play with 10:53 remaining in the final stanza for a comfortable 81-69 lead.
Later in the fourth, another Williams three-point play drew the Hawks to 85-79, but six straight points by the Clippers helped the club put the game away. Maggette and Cassell each had a bucket and Chris Kaman drained a pair of free throws with 5 1/2 minutes left to make the game 91-79.
Atlanta made it close in the final seconds, but it never became a one possession game.
Williams ended with 12 points for the Hawks, who last beat the Clippers on March 10, 2003.
The Clippers led after one quarter 27-25 and carried a 50-47 edge into the locker room. The score after three quarters was 75-69 in favor of LA.
The Hawks are off to their worst start since beginning the 2000-01 season 0-7. Atlanta dropped its first four last year on its way to a 13-69 mark. The 00-01 club finished 25-57.
