Seattle, WA (Basketball News) - Pau Gasol poured in 22 points with eight rebounds and eight assists as the Memphis Grizzlies defeated the Seattle SuperSonics, 100-96, at KeyArena.
Shane Battier added 19 points for the Grizzlies, who have won three in a row. Eddie Jones chipped in 17 points on 5-of-14 shooting from the field.
Memphis played without guard Damon Stoudamire, who suffered a knee injury during Friday’s 93-90 victory over Portland and could be sidelined for the remainder of the season.
Ray Allen led the Sonics with 28 points as the club dropped two of its last three games. Rashard Lewis added 19 points in defeat.
As time ran out in the third quarter of action, Battier hit a long three- pointer to give the Grizzlies a 75-68 lead heading into the final quarter of play. Battier had eight points during the quarter.
In the final frame, Memphis continued to run in front, however, a 9-0 spurt by Seattle made it a four-point game at 92-88 with 3:27 left to play.
Ronald Murray stole the ball from Eddie Jones and slammed it home with 31.8 seconds left making the score 96-94.
On the next possession, Dahntay Jones hit a running jumper that just beat the shot clock and left 6.6 ticks on the clock to put the Grizzlies up by four.
Memphis led 30-26 after the opening 12 minutes with Gasol leading the way with 12 points on a perfect 5-of-5 shooting from the floor.
The Grizzlies outscored the SuperSonics 25-24 in the second stanza for a 55-50 lead at halftime. As a team, Memphis shot 60.6 percent from the field in the first half.
