Charlotte, NC (Basketball News) - Primoz Brezec scored 12 of his career-high 27 points in the fourth quarter, and the Bobcats held on for a 94-92 victory over the Miami Heat at Charlotte Coliseum.
Brezec added a team-high 11 rebounds for the Bobcats, who won for just the fourth time in 18 games. Gerald Wallace added 17 points and seven rebounds for the Bobcats and Emeka Okafor scored 12 before spraining his left ankle with 3:32 remaining in the third quarter.
Shaquille O’Neal collected 26 points and 16 rebounds to pace the NBA-leading Heat, who suffered their first loss to a Southeast Division team in 14 games this season one night after clinching the division title with a win over the Phoenix Suns.
Dwyane Wade added 19 points for Miami, but he made a mental mistake at the end of the game that cost the Heat a good chance for a tie.
The second-year guard got Miami within 92-89 on a pair of free throws with 50 seconds left, and an Eddie Jones layup pulled the Heat within 93-91 with 12 seconds to play.
After a Brevin Knight free throw extended the Charlotte lead to three points, Miami’s Damon Jones airballed a three-pointer at the other end.
Wade grabbed the rebound and was fouled with 4.1 seconds remaining. He made the first attempt at the line before purposely missing the second one so that the rebound came right back to him in the lane.
But instead of taking a short jumper for the tie, Wade inexplicably dribbled to the left corner and fired a three-point attempt that hit off the back of the rim as time expired.
"He was the only guy out there that did not know the score," said Heat head coach Stan Van Gundy.
Miami entered the game 27-4 against below .500 teams, and was going for its 14th win in 15 games.
But Charlotte led by as many as 13 points in the win after being swept in two previous games against the Heat by an average of more than 16 points.
"This is a very satisfying win," said Knight. "We held our own against a championship contender, and in the end were able to win it."
The Bobcats trailed 26-23 after the first quarter, but outscored Miami 27-13 in the second for a 50-39 lead at halftime. The teams were then tied 70-70 heading into the fourth.
