Los Angeles, CA (Basketball News) - Elton Brand had 37 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Los Angeles Clippers over the Miami Heat, 99-89, at Staples Center.
Sam Cassell added 18 points and dished out 13 assists and Corey Maggette chipped in with 13 points and six rebounds for the Clippers, who have won their last two games and lead the Pacific Division.
Dwyane Wade scored 29 points and pulled down six rebounds and Alonzo Mourning put up 17 points and pulled down 12 rebounds for the Heat, who have lost their last two contests.
Los Angeles played the game in the jerseys of the Buffalo Braves, where the franchise was located from 1970 to 1978 until the team moved to San Diego
The Clippers had a 78-75 lead going into the third quarter, but they started the last 12 minutes with a 12-2 run and took a 90-77 lead after Brand hit a jump shot with 7:48 to play. The Heat scored the next five points to pull within eight points with 5:30 left.
That was as close as they would get, as on the next play Cuttino Mobley hit a three-pointer and the Heat never got the lead under 10 points for the rest of the game.
The Heat started out the game with a 10-3 run capped off by a Mourning hook shot with less than eight minutes to play in the opening 12 minutes. They led by as many as 10 points in the quarter and had a 28-21 lead to start the second.
However, the Clippers started the second on a 13-2 run to take a 34-30 lead after Maggette hit three straight free throws with 8:51 to play. Miami came back with a 9-2 run of its own and take a 39-36 lead after Jason Williams hit a three-pointer with under six minutes to play.
Los Angeles scored the next seven points to regain the advantage, and although Miami had a 46-45 lead after Williams drained a trey with 2:06 remaining, the Clippers took a 52-49 lead into the locker room.
Both teams scored 26 points in the third quarter.
