Philadelphia, PA (Basketball News) - Allen Iverson scored 38 points and dished out 16 assists as Philadelphia needed overtime to defeat Miami, 126-119, at the Wachovia Center.
Marc Jackson added 26 points, while Kyle Korver netted 20 for the Sixers, who won for the fifth time in six tries and moved into a tie with Cleveland for the seventh spot in the Eastern Conference playoff race. Andre Iguodala finished with 19 points and 10 rebounds in the win. Cleveland fell to New York, 95-89.
"I say it all the time, the one that we need is the first one," said Iverson. "We had to play tonight, so this is the one we need more than anything. This was our biggest game of the season. And every one down the stretch is going to be just that."
Dwyane Wade poured in a career-high 48 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for the Heat, who lost their third straight. Damon Jones netted 18 and Udonis Haslem tallied 17 points in the losing effort. Shaquille O’Neal had 13 points and 12 rebounds.
Philadelphia grabbed a seven-point advantage in the extra session, following an Iverson steal of the Heat inbounds pass. He spotted Korver on the perimeter, who then buried the trey making it a 113-106 contest.
Jones was whistled for a technical foul after arguing a call and Korver knocked down the free throw to make it an eight-point spread.
Leading 116-113 moments later, Jackson sealed the win when his jumper with 40.5 seconds left made it a five-point game.
"We’re a tough team to beat. For whatever reason, we didn’t transfer that into the second half," said Jones. "You have to give credit to Philadelphia. They’re fighting for something to get into the playoffs and they did a hell of a job."
Trailing 81-77 heading into the fourth quarter, Korver trimmed the Philadelphia deficit to one when his trey to open the frame made it 81-80.
The game remained close for the remainder of the fourth quarter, but after a Chris Webber jumper with just under four minutes remaining, the Sixers led 96-94.
Miami countered though, with four straight points capped by a slam by Wade after a nice feed from Haslem to make it a 98-96 game with 2:36 left on the clock.
Both teams continued to trade buckets over the next couple minutes with neither team leading by more than two.
After Iverson missed a runner in the lane, Wade nailed a jumper just before the shot clock expired to put the Heat up 102-100.
Webber tied the game at 102-102 on a jumper moments later, but Wade responded by hitting a bucket to put Miami back on top.
With less than 20 seconds to go, Iverson was fouled on his driving layup attempt by Wade. He knocked down both tries, making it a 104-104 game with 11.5 ticks left on the clock.
Eddie Jones triggered the inbounds to Wade out of the timeout, who dribbled at the top of the key with Iguodala guarding him. Wade tried to shake him but couldn’t get an open look and fired up a long-range jumper that was off the mark as time expired.
Philadelphia held a slim 27-26 advantage after 12 minutes, but the Heat garnered a 61-52 lead at intermission.
