San Antonio, TX (Basketball News) - Tim Duncan collected 25 points, 14 rebounds, six assists and five blocked shots to lead the San Antonio Spurs to an easy 89-73 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves at SBC Center.
Robert Horry added 18 points for the Spurs, who have won two straight and seven of their last nine contests. San Antonio also pulled one-half game ahead of the Phoenix Suns for the top spot in the Western Conference.
Brent Barry and Tony Parker posted 11 points and six assists apiece in the victory.
Latrell Sprewell collected 21 points and eight boards for the Timberwolves, who have dropped three of their last five contests. Wally Szczerbiak netted 20 points in the loss, while Kevin Garnett chipped in 12 points and 11 rebounds.
The Spurs, who never trailed in the game, came out blazing in the opening quarter. They started the game on a 10-4 run and soon pushed that advantage to 21-9. By the time the first period was over the Spurs held a 32-18 cushion.
Duncan scored eight points in the quarter for San Antonio, which shot 70- percent in the game’s first 12 minutes.
The Timberwolves were able to cut the deficit to five points after Szczerbiak’s jumper made it 38-33 with 5:07 remaining in the second quarter. San Antonio then rattled off seven straight points to push its lead back to double digits and would hold a 51-39 advantage at the break.
Duncan led all players with 14 points and nine rebounds at halftime, while Szczerbiak netted 11 points to pace the Timberwolves. Garnett added 10 points and seven boards for Minnesota in the opening half.
The Spurs pushed their cushion to its apex early in the third quarter when Barry’s layup made it 60-41. San Antonio would hold a 73-57 lead after 36 minutes.
San Antonio led by as many as 18 points in the fourth quarter while coasting to the victory.
