Toronto, ON (Basketball News) - Vince Carter scored 42 points against his former team, and buried a three-pointer with 0.1 seconds left, as the New Jersey Nets won their 10th straight game with a 105-104 victory over the Toronto Raptors at the Air Canada Centre.
Carter scored 24 in the final quarter. He also had 10 rebounds and shot 18- of-35 from the field. Jason Kidd added 22 points, six rebounds and 15 assists in the win.
"The atmosphere, the emotion, the hostility in the arena, it was a fun game to play in," said Carter. "It felt like game seven of the playoffs."
After Carter knocked down a pair of shots from the charity strip to cut the New Jersey deficit to 103-102 with 10 seconds remaining, Jose Calderon hit only 1-of-2 free throws on the other end. Carter then connected on a a deep three from the left wing to give the Nets the victory. Toronto’s final inbounds pass went awry.
"(Carter’s) been off the charts and there is no better place for him to make a big shot than here," said Kidd. "Tonight we go shorthanded, losing R.J. (Richard Jefferson) two minutes into the game and everybody stepped up and pitched in to help."
New Jersey played most of the game without Jefferson, who logged only two- plus minutes because of back spasms.
Chris Bosh netted 27 points with seven rebounds for the Raptors, who saw their season-best five-game winning streak come to an end. Mike James added 26 points, seven rebounds and seven assists in the loss.
Toronto’s Morris Peterson saw his day come to an end just before the conclusion of the second quarter. After receiving a technical for arguing with a referee, Peterson and Carter later exchanged slaps and Peterson was called for his second technical foul. However, the referees did not see Carter’s slap and he was not hit with a technical.
"During different times of the game, Vince might try to horseplay around and it’s unfortunate what happened," said Peterson. "It wasn’t anything where we were fighting or anything out there on the court. (The referee) didn’t see what happened first. He didn’t see Vince put his hands across my face, so I did that same thing back and I end up getting caught."
"I don’t know what to say about (the ejection)," said Carter. "Mo Pete and I are always having a good time. Mr. Javie (the referee), I guess he turned at the wrong time and felt like (Mo) had punched me in the face or whatever...I hate for it to happen that way."
The Raptors started the fourth frame hot, scoring the first seven points to go up 80-76. Toronto later extended to an 84-79 edge, but Carter’s basket with 6:44 left later tied the contest at 86-86.
Four straight points by the Raptors made it a 90-86 contest and Bosh later netted four straight points of his own to extended Toronto to a 98-90 edge.
A three-pointer by Kidd and a layup by Carter pulled New Jersey to within three at 98-95. However, James answered with a three-pointer with 1:01 remaining to put Toronto ahead six.
Carter then netted the next five points of the game for a 101-100 game before the exciting finish.
Toronto netted the first six points of the third to go ahead 57-48, but a basket by Nenad Krstic later pulled New Jersey to within 59-57 with 7:29 remaining in the third.
Carter later capped a 7-0 Nets run that tied the contest at 68-68 and New Jersey scored eight of the last 11 points of the third to lead 76-73 heading into the fourth.
Toronto held a 21-14 lead in the first, but the Nets closed out the frame on a 15-2 run to hold a 29-23 advantage going into the second.
The Raptors battled back to tie the contest at 35-35 midway through the second and Toronto later opened up a 47-40 edge with 2:35 remaining. The Raptors went into the break up three at 51-48.
