NBA Game Summary - New York at Charlotte

Charlotte, NC (Basketball News) - Stephon Marbury scored eight of his game-high 19 points in the fourth quarter and his jumper with 1.7 seconds remaining in the game sealed a 100-98 win over the Bobcats at Charlotte Coliseum.

Marbury buried 5-of-8 three-pointers, handed out nine assists, grabbed four rebounds and collected three steals for the Knicks, who have won their last three road games. Jamal Crawford had 17 points, while Kurt Thomas posted 16 and 11 boards in the win.

"It was definitely a grind," Marbury said after the game. "But we just continued to play hard."

Keith Bogans paced seven Charlotte players in double figures with 15 points. Gerald Wallace had 14 points and 14 rebounds and Jason Kapono added 14 points off the bench for the Bobcats, who were denied the first three-game win streak in franchise history.

Brevin Knight chipped in 13 points and Melvin Ely contributed 12 and 11 rebounds in a losing cause. Malik Allen and Matt Carroll both netted 10 points off the bench for the Bobcats.

After Knight evened the score at 98-98 on two free throws with 20 seconds left, Marbury nailed the eventual game-winner on the other end. Marbury dribbled around Knight, thanks to a great pick by Thomas, and sank the jump shot from the right corner with 1.7 seconds on the clock.

"Kurt and I have been running the pick and roll all year long," Marbury said.

Charlotte had one last chance but Allen’s desperation jumper caromed off the front of the rim as time expired.

The Knicks led by a 27-25 score after 12 minutes of play and later carried a 58-49 cushion into the locker room. Wallace led all scorers at halftime with 12 points, while Mike Sweetney and Thomas both had 10 points for New York.

Tim Thomas’ basket with less than six minutes remaining in the third quarter staked the Knicks to a 71-60 lead. New York then led by a 79-69 score after three quarters of action.

Charlotte stepped up its play in the fourth and took a 91-90 lead on Kapono’s three-pointer and layup in succession with less than four minutes remaining in the game. Crawford, however, buried a three and New York took back the lead at 93-91.

The Knicks were ahead, 95-93, but Knight converted a three-point play with 1:11 left for a one-point Charlotte edge. New York took its lead back again when Marbury knocked down a three from the left corner for a 98-96 advantage with 29.6 seconds left.

"He’s very quick," Knight said of Marbury on the last play of the game. "That’s what great players do, they make big shots at big times, and he did it."
