NBA Game Summary - Orlando at Indiana

Indianapolis, IN (Basketball News) - Hedo Turkoglu scored 23 points and Grant Hill added 19, leading Orlando to an 85-84 victory over Indiana at Conseco Fieldhouse.

Steve Francis collected 17 points before fouling out as the Magic held on down the stretch. Orlando, which led by as many as 18 points in the game, has won five of seven.

Jermaine O’Neal poured in 38 points with 15 rebounds to lead the Pacers, who were coming off an impressive 101-83 thumping of the NBA-leading Phoenix Suns on Friday night.

"[Orlando] played somewhat the way that we did last night, the level that you have to play to win in this league," said Indiana forward James Jones. "We’ve got to reload, make the adjustments and play as if every game is going to help us get to the playoffs. Our best foot must be forward from now on."

Jamaal Tinsley added 12 points in defeat. He was the only other Indiana scorer in double figures.

The Magic never trailed after taking a 19-18 lead on Dwight Howard’s layup with 4:23 remaining in the first quarter. But they couldn’t put the Pacers away.

Indiana trailed 65-57 heading into the fourth quarter, and later used a 9-1 run to pull within 78-77 on an O’Neal free throw with 2:31 remaining. Francis’ sixth foul sent O’Neal to the line.

Hill then tipped in his own miss at the other end, giving Orlando one of four three-point leads it would enjoy before the end of the game.

The Magic last led by three at 85-82 after Kelvin Cato calmly made a pair of free throws with seven seconds remaining. Fred Jones sent Cato to the line with his sixth foul, called under the basket while Cato was attempting to beat the shot clock.

Reggie Miller then went to the line with a chance to tie it after he was fouled by Doug Christie on a three-point attempt with 3.3 ticks left. Miller missed the first try and made the final two, though it appeared he was attempting to miss the third on purpose.

"It was very unusual," Magic coach Johnny Davis said of Miller’s trip to the line. "We were very fortunate."

After an inbounds at the other end, rookie Jameer Nelson went to the line for Orlando with a chance to make it a three-point game again. He missed badly on both attempts, but with just 2.6 seconds left it didn’t matter.

Tinsley banked in a desperation heave just over midcourt after the buzzer sounded.

"I didn’t think we did a great job of closing them out," Hill said. "We were fortunate that we got to the free throw line and got some stops on defense. Any time you hold a team to 84 points at home, you’re going to give yourself a chance to win. It’s nice to see that we were able to hold them to that kind of score."

The Pacers missed seven free throws in the fourth quarter and 14 in the game (24-of-38). They shot 38 percent from the floor and were just 2-of-14 from three-point territory.

Orlando shot 41 percent from the field and 23-of-32 from the line.

Turkoglu scored 10 points in the opening period on 4-of-5 shooting, and the Magic carried a 27-22 advantage into the second after leading by as many as nine.

The Orlando lead reached as high as 18 points twice in the second quarter, the last time coming when Francis’ 18-footer made it 53-35 with 1:25 remaining.

But Indiana ended the half with a 7-0 run, cutting its deficit to 53-42 when James Jones nailed a three-pointer with 2.3 seconds left.

O’Neal led all players with 20 points in the first half, but the Pacers shot just 35 percent as a team. Orlando got 19 points from Turkoglu before the break, and shot 53 percent from the floor.

The Magic’s lead reached 13 twice in the third quarter, including 60-47 on a Turkoglu free throw midway through, but Indiana used an 8-1 run to pull within 61-55. O’Neal scored six straight points during the spurt, and Scot Pollard capped it with a jumper at 2:41.
