Philadelphia, PA (Basketball News) - Allen Iverson poured in 38 points and grabbed eight rebounds to help Philadelphia head coach Maurice Cheeks beat his former team, as the 76ers routed the Portland Trail Blazers, 107-83, at the Wachovia Center.
Cheeks, who coached the Blazers for four years before being fired last March, received a solid rebounding effort from his team on Tuesday, as the Sixers posted just their second win in six games.
"We lost four out of five games and it didn’t matter who it was. We had to win a basketball game; it just so happened that it was Portland," Cheeks said. "It had nothing to do with the Trailblazers."
Chris Webber had 16 points and 15 boards while Kyle Korver added 16 points for Philadelphia. John Salmons tallied 13 points for the Sixers, who held a 60-30 advantage on the glass.
"I didn’t know we beat them that bad on the boards," Iverson said. "That’s our most important thing going into every game is rebounding and defending."
Iverson shot 16-of-27 from the floor and made all five of his foul shots, as Philadelphia beat Portland for the fifth time in the last seven meetings.
Zach Randolph hit for 24 points and Darius Miles had 13 for the Trail Blazers, who have lost five of their last seven contests.
"I thought they were just quicker to the ball," Blazers head coach Nate McMillan said. "It’s tough to stay in a game when a team is out-scrapping you like that. We just looked like a team that was tired."
The Sixers held a 23-20 lead after one quarter, but used a big push in the second to open a sizeable advantage. An 8-2 spurt early on extended Cheeks’ team to a 33-23 edge, as Webber capped the rally with a hook shot.
A 13-5 run at the end of the half then moved Philadelphia to a 58-42 cushion. Andre Iguodala started the run with an alley-oop dunk off a pass from Iverson, and Salmons’ successful jump shot ended the half.
The Blazers got within 70-59 on two free throws by Joel Przybilla with 3:40 to go in the third, but the Sixers led 80-65 after the quarter and widened that margin to as many as 30 points in the fourth. Kevin Ollie’s layup put the Sixers in front 107-77 with 2:46 remaining and they cruised to the lopsided win.
