Washington, DC (Basketball News) - Cuttino Mobley sank two free throws with 1.5 seconds remaining to help Sacramento escape with a thrilling 110-108 win over Washington at the MCI Center.
Mike Bibby finished with 38 points, while Mobley ended with 18 for the Kings, who have won two straight in dramatic fashion. Kenny Thomas collected 12 points to go along with 10 rebounds for Sacramento, which has won two straight and three of four.
The Kings played without the services of sharpshooting swingman Peja Stojakovic (hamstring) once again. It is unknown when Stojakovic, who has missed the last six games, will return to the court.
Gilbert Arenas paced all players by tying his career-best with 43, but it was his costly foul that sent Mobley to the line. Steve Blake added 17 points off the pine, while Brendan Haywood added 13 for the Wizards, who have dropped two in a row and five of six.
Kwame Brown chipped in with 10 points and 10 boards in the setback.
Trailing 104-97 with 3:41 left in the contest, Sacramento used a a 13-4 run to close the game and steal the win. After Michael Ruffin’s free throw gave the Wizards a 108-106 lead with 53 seconds to, Mobley and Arenas would exchange misses. But Mobley would have the last laugh with 19 seconds left.
Following a Brown miss and a time out, Mobley would get the ball at the top of the key, patiently wait for the game clock to tick down and penetrate the lane. However, he was bailed out by Arenas, who hacked him as he went up for a short shot in the lane.
He calmly sank both free throws and Blake’s desperation three clanked off the rim as time expired. Washington’s carelessness with the ball helped the Kings secure the win. Sacramento scored 10 of its 19 final points off of Wizards’ turnovers.
Washington would own a 21-18 lead with around four minutes left in the opening quarter, but the Kings closed the frame on a 14-3 burst to take an eight-point edge into the second. Bibby’s driving layup capped the run as Sacramento led 32-24 after 12 minutes of action.
The Kings lead remained at eight, 48-40, with under five minutes left in the first half before the Wizards used a 10-2 burst to even up the contest. Blake’s layup ended the quick spurt, making it 50-50 with under two minutes to go in the half.
The game was then knotted up at 54-54 as both teams headed into the locker room. Bibby paced the Kings with 19 points, while Arenas led all players with 22 points for the Wizards at the break.
The third quarter was tightly contested. Washington, though, would take a slim 85-81 lead into the fourth on Laron’s Profit dunk as time expired in the frame.
