Boston, MA (Basketball News) - Gilbert Arenas ended with 38 points, eight rebounds and eight assists to lead the Washington Wizards over the Boston Celtics, 108-91, at TD Banknorth Garden.
Arenas sparked a key 16-2 run that bridged the final two quarters and finished shooting 14-of-22 from the field, including 5-of-9 from three, for the Wizards, who have won two in a row and remain in the fifth spot in the Eastern Conference playoff race.
Caron Butler added 26 points and six boards and Antawn Jamison had 13 points for Washington, which has won four of six overall.
Paul Pierce had 29 points and seven rebounds for the Celtics, who have dropped eight of 12 and fell four games out of the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Chicago defeated Philadelphia on Wednesday night to take over the final playoff spot by one-half game over the Sixers.
Delonte West added 15 points for Boston, which led late in the third quarter only to see things quickly fall apart.
Down 78-75 late in the third quarter, the Wizards went on the 16-2 run that spanned the final two quarters to pull away. Arenas started the run with a free throw and Antonio Daniels’ three-point play sent Washington into the fourth with a 79-78 edge. Arenas added five more points during the surge in the fourth and Butler capped it with a jumper 3 1/2 minutes into the final frame for a 91-80 cushion.
The Celtics never threatened after that and Washington won going away.
Daniels ended with eight points and nine assists for Washington, which led 32-26 after one quarter and 54-50 going into halftime.
