"We are thrilled to attract a coach of Richie Adubato’s caliber," said general manager Linda Hargrove. "His experience and success in the WNBA speaks for itself and he is highly respected by his colleagues and players."
Adubato coached the New York Liberty the last five seasons, guiding the team to Eastern Conference championships in 1999, 2001, and 2003 as well as four WNBA Finals. In his time there, he compiled a 100-79 record, as the Liberty became only the third WNBA franchise to reach the 100-win milestone.
He also coached in the WNBA All-Star Games in 2000, 2001, and 2003.
"I am excited to join the Mystics organization and team," said Adubato. "MCI Center is a great place to play. Washington has a tremendous fan base and that helps the team play hard every night."
Prior to joining the WNBA, Adubato spent 19 years coaching in the NBA, including head coaching stints with the Detroit Pistons, Dallas Mavericks and Orlando Magic.
