Bryant, Parker lead Lakers past Magic

12.28.2006

Orlando, FL (Basketball News) - Kobe Bryant scored 27 points and doled out seven assists, and Smush Parker had a season-high 20 points as the LA Lakers defeated the Orlando Magic, 106-93.

Grant Hill scored 20 points for the Magic, who have lost three straight and six of eight. Jameer Nelson scored 15 points and tallied seven assists for Orlando. Darko Milicic scored 13 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Dwight Howard and Hedo Turkoglu scored 12 points each, and Howard pulled down eight boards in the loss.

Andrew Bynum scored 13 points off the bench for the Lakers, who have won three of four.

"This team has some players that are giving us a big bump," said Lakers head coach Phil Jackson. "Obviously Andrew (Bynum) had an offensive game that was important for us tonight."

Milicic converted a three-point play to bring the Magic to within 83-80 with 9:19 remaining, but the Lakers answered with a 16-5 run to put the game away. A Bryant three-point play closed the run, putting LA up 99-85 with 3:27 left.

"It’s frustrating," said Howard of the loss. "We can’t get a win at home."

Three straight baskets by Hill put the Magic up 63-55 with 6:31 left in the third quarter, and Orlando held a 70-64 lead after two Nelson free throws with 3:57 left. Parker and the Lakers turned it on, though, and the Lakers closed the third quarter with a 15-3 run. Parker scored 18 of his 20 points in the third quarter. A Brian Cook three in the closing seconds of the quarter sent the Lakers into the final 12 minutes ahead 79-73.

The Magic had controlled the game early. A Luke Walton jump shot put the Lakers up 12-10 with 6:12 left, but LA was held scoreless for almost three minutes as the Magic took a seven-point lead. Two Turkoglu layups sandwiched a Nelson lay-in, giving Orlando a 19-12 lead with 3:38 left. The Magic led 25-21 entering the second quarter.

Orlando opened the second quarter with a 12-4 run to extend its lead. Trevor Ariza scored eight of the 12 points, and his driving layup put the Magic up 37-25 with 7:31 left in the second, Orlando’s largest lead of the game. The Lakers came charging back, though, and Bryant hit a jumper with just over a minute left to pull LA to within 47-46, the score at halftime.
