Carter leads Nets to big win over Sixers

01.18.2006

Philadelphia, PA (Basketball News) - Vince Carter poured in 31 points and dished out 10 assists, as the New Jersey Nets defeated the Philadelphia 76ers, 101-90, at Wachovia Center.

Carter also grabbed eight rebounds and Richard Jefferson hit the glass with 16 boards to go along with 20 points in the victory, New Jersey’s second straight.

Nenad Krstic scored 16 points and pulled down seven rebounds while Clifford Robinson came off the bench to tally 15 points for the Nets. Jason Kidd did a little bit of everything with nine points, nine assists and seven rebounds in the win.

Allen Iverson led the Sixers with 36 points and dished out nine assists while Chris Webber chipped in 15 points and eight boards for Philadelphia, which has lost two straight games and three of its last four. Andre Iguodala added 11 points in the loss.

New Jersey used an 11-0 burst in the third quarter to take a 61-46 lead. Carter scored four points during the run courtesy of a half hook in the lane and a slam off a fast break.

The Nets eventually took a 77-69 lead into the fourth period.

Philadelphia scored just two points in the opening five minutes of the fourth quarter and the Nets took advantage. They tallied the first nine points of the stanza, five from Jefferson and four from Robinson, to break the contest wide open. Robinson drained another jumper with 7:19 remaining to give New Jersey an 88-71 edge.

Dalembert’s layup with 4:23 left capped a 10-1 Philadelphia push that cut the deficit to 89-81. Carter, though, then drained a floater in the lane and a jumper to increase the edge to 93-81 and the Sixers did not threaten again.

Philadelphia jumped out to a 9-2 lead behind four early points from Iverson, but New Jersey outscored the Sixers 28-11 the rest of the period to open a double-digit lead. Krstic was a perfect 4-of-4 for nine points in the stanza.

John Salmons’ jumper late in the second quarter cut the Nets’ lead to 44-42, but New Jersey tallied the final four points of the half. Jefferson led all scorers with 12 and Carter added 11 for the Nets.
