Mr. Jones and Terps win season opener

College Park, MD (Basketball News) - Mike Jones netted 22 points on 8-of-11 shooting to lead the 24th-ranked Maryland Terrapins past the Fairleigh Dickinson Knights, 111-85, at the Comcast Center.

Nik Caner-Medley and Chris McCray added 18 points and six rebounds each for Maryland (1-0), which improved to 14-3 in season openers under head coach Gary Williams, including 11-0 at home. Ekene Ibekwe added 16 points and eight rebounds in the win.

Maryland has also won four straight season openers as it shot 32-of-38 from the free-throw line in the victory.

Gordon Klaiber paced Fairleigh Dickinson with 20 points, four blocks and four steals. Cameron Tyler and John Blackgrove each netted 17 points for the Knights (1-2), who have lost two of three.

Chad Timberlake also reached double figures for FDU, chipping in 15 points.

Fairleigh Dickinson held a 9-8 lead 2:20 into the opening half until Maryland went on an 8-0 run to make it 16-9. The Knights would battle back however, and Michael Peeples’ jumper tied the contest at 18-18 with 12:54 left in the first half. The Terrapins then went on a 15-4 spurt, capped by a James Gist jumper, making it a 33-22 contest with 8:28 left.

A jumper by Blackgrove would later cut the Terps lead to 35-30 until a 6-0 run by Maryland made it an 11-point game. Again, FDU would claw back and two free throws by Klaiber would cut it to 48-42 with 1:19 remaining. Maryland would then score the last four points of the frame to send the game into the half at 52-42.

A dunk by McCray extended Maryland’s lead to 65-44 3:47 into the second half and a three-point bucket by Ibekwe gave the Terps a 78-50 advantage as Maryland began to pull away. A 7-0 run would then put Maryland up 94-70 with 6:40 left.

A Jones layup gave the Terps a 100-74 lead 2:04 later and two free throws by Klaiber would pull FDU to within 105-83 with 1:38 left to play. Maryland then scored six straight en route to the win.

Game Notes

Maryland is now 6-0 all-time versus Fairleigh Dickinson...The Terps have won 22 consecutive non-conference games at the Comcast Center...Peeples finished with eight points and six rebounds...Gist finished with 12 points and Travis Garrison added 11 for Maryland...The Terps outrebounded the Knights 47-31...McCray also had six assists...Tyler had six assists...Maryland scored 30 points off of turnovers.
