Golden State Warriors 2004 Draft Preview

06.14.2004

(Basketball News) - The Golden State Warriors have a new head coach in Mike Montgomery and will try to draft a player who will fit his style of play.

Montgomery, who does not have any coaching experience in the NBA, led Stanford to a 30-2 record this past season on the way to Pac-10 Coach of the Year honors. He had spent the last 18 years with the Cardinal.

The Warriors could lose center Erick Dampier and point guard Nick Van Exel, who have the option to opt out of their contracts. The 32-year-old Van Exel did miss 43 games during the regular season due to injuries.

Golden State has some young and exciting players in guard Jason Richardson and forward Mike Dunleavy Jr. The Warriors will draft the best player available at No. 11.

St. Joe’s Jameer Nelson and Arizona’s Andre Iguodala could be there for Golden State to pick up.

Key Player(s): Erick Dampier (center), Mike Dunleavy Jr. (forward), Troy Murphy (forward), Jason Richardson (guard), Nick Van Exel (guard).

Team Needs: Inside toughness and a point guard.

Draft picks: 1st round (11th overall).
