Grizzlies down Lakers

03.28.2007

Los Angeles, CA (Basketball News) - Tarence Kinsey poured in a career-high 24 points to lead the Memphis Grizzlies past the Los Angeles Lakers, 88-86, at the Staples Center.

Rudy Gay added 20 points and a career-best 12 rebounds for the Grizzlies, who ended a four-game slide.

Kobe Bryant, whose streak of scoring at least 50 points ended Sunday, had 23 points on 7-of-26 shooting from the floor for the Lakers, who had a five-game win streak end.

Luke Walton had 15 points and Smush Parker had 14 for Los Angeles, which remained in sixth place in the Western Conference despite the loss.

Trailing eight points at halftime, the Grizzlies outscored the Lakers 27-14 in the third quarter to take a 68-63 lead into the final frame.

Los Angeles pulled within 73-72 after Sasha Vujacic drained a three-pointer with 6:45 remaining in the fourth quarter.

With 1:15 left, Walton hit a three to even the score at 81-81, but Kinsey answered with a three of his own to give the Grizzlies a three-point edge with 54 seconds to go.

Lamar Odom then missed a three and Kinsey pulled down the rebound and got fouled at the other end. He sunk both shots from the charity stripe to make it 86-81.

With nine ticks left, Bryant hit a fadeaway three from the left corner to pull LA within two. The Lakers then fouled Pau Gasol and he hit 1-of-2 from the line to make it 87-84.

With a foul to give, Memphis put Bryant on the line and he hit both shots to make it 87-86 with eight seconds left.

Hakim Warrick was then fouled and went 1-of-2 from the charity stripe to make it 88-86 with 6.5 seconds to go.

After a timeout, Parker threw up a trey from the right corner that fell short as Memphis held on for the victory.

Los Angeles ended the opening quarter on a 7-0 surge to lead 27-15 after one period. Cook started things with a three-pointer and Ronny Turiaf and Vujacic followed with jump shots.

The Grizzlies outscored the Lakers by four points in the second stanza, but still trailed 49-41 at halftime.

Bryant and Parker each had 12 points at the break to pace Los Angeles.
