Hamilton lifts Pistons over Grizzlies

11.4.2006

Auburn Hills, MI (Basketball News) - Rip Hamilton poured in a game-high 24 points and Rasheed Wallace scored 15 — 12 of which came in the second half — as the Detroit Pistons topped the Memphis Grizzlies, 95-86, at the Palace of Auburn Hills.

Hamilton finished 9-of-17 shooting with five assists and six rebounds while Wallace grabbed 13 boards for the Pistons, who have won two straight.

Nazr Mohammed had 13 points and Tayshaun Prince added 12 in the win. Jason Maxiell came off the bench and set a new career-high with 13 points in just over 20 minutes of action.

Detroit shot 51 percent from the field, but was just 23 percent from three- point range.

Hakim Warrick led the Grizzlies with 21 points on 7-of-16 shooting with six rebounds. Chucky Atkins scored 19 off the bench and Rudy Gay added 10 with nine boards.

Memphis, which has dropped two of its first three games, shot just 38 percent from the field and turned the ball over 14 times.

Detroit got out to a 10-4 lead with just over seven minutes to play in the first, capped by a Wallace dunk. Each team then traded leads until Warrick broke a 16-16 tie with a free throw. Mohammed scored 12 points for the Pistons, but Dahntay Jones hit a jumper and Atkins had four points in the final 1:27 as Memphis ended the first quarter with a 25-23 edge.

In the second, the contest remained tight until Wallace’s free throw, and jump shots by Ronald Murray and Maxiell put the Pistons up by five with 3:50 to play. Chauncey Billups’ two free throws after a foul by Lawrence Roberts gave Detroit a 46-40 advantage going into halftime.

Billups drained a fade away jumper to give Detroit its largest lead, up by nine with 3:39 remaining in the third. Wallace then followed up with one of his own, but Atkins kept pouring it on for the Grizzlies with two free throws and two layups. Maxiell, though, hit a jump shot with 0.7 seconds left in the third for the 70-62 lead.

Memphis clawed back and tied the game 81-81 with 5:18 to play in regulation, but the Pistons went on a 14-3 burst, led by Wallace and Hamilton, who scored eight of the final points en route to the win.
