Miami, FL (Basketball News) - The Miami Heat have re-signed veteran point guard Gary Payton. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not released.

Payton averaged 7.7 points, 3.2 assists and 2.9 rebounds in 81 games last season for the defending NBA champions.

Payton, who was named Defensive Player of the Year in 1996 and was an NBA All-Defensive First Team selection in eight consecutive seasons (1994-2001), has averaged 16.9 points, 6.9 assists, 4.1 rebounds and 1.90 steals per game during his stellar career with the Seattle SuperSonics, Milwaukee Bucks, Los Angeles Lakers, Boston Celtics and Heat.

Payton was also named All-NBA First-Team in 1998 and 2000 and was selected to the NBA All-Star team on nine occasions. In addition, Payton was a member of the gold medal-winning 1996 and 2000 U.S. Men’s Olympic teams.
