Hornets barely alive in playoff race

04.12.2006

(Sports Network) - The New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets are 37-40 and are mathematically still alive in the Western Conference playoff race. They are three games behind the Sacramento Kings for the eighth and final playoff spot in the West.

On Wednesday, the Hornets must pick up a win against the Seattle SuperSonics at the Ford Center. It is the fourth and final meeting of the season between the clubs. The teams split a pair of games at KeyArena, while the Hornets defeated the Sonics, 109-102, on February 8th at the Ford Center.

Seattle has lost three of its last five at the Hornets.

New Orleans/Oklahoma City has dropped two straight games. On Monday, LeBron James hit the game-winning basket with 0.5 seconds left to lift the Cleveland Cavaliers to a 103-101 victory over the Hornets at the Ford Center.

Rookie phenom Chris Paul finished with 22 points and eight rebounds, while Speedy Claxton and David West both netted 14 in the loss to Cleveland for the Hornets, who have lost three of their last five games overall.

The Hornets, who play the middle contest of a three-game homestand, are 23-16 as the host this season. They are scheduled to host the Utah Jazz on Friday.

New Orleans/Oklahoma City is scheduled to closeout its regular season on the road. It will visit Sacramento on Sunday, Phoenix on Monday and the Lakers on April 19th.
