How Philadelphia solves the Elton Brand chemistry issue

July 18 09

He wasn’t a fit.

Last year, the emerging Philadelphia 76ers gave free agent Elton Brand a max contract because they believed he’d put their young core over the top. By adding a perennial All-Star, The City of Brotherly Love was supposed to challenge Orlando as the Eastern Conference’s up-and-coming power.

Of course, Brand got hurt early in the 2008-09 season. Prior to getting injured, it was obvious he wasn’t Philadelphia’s missing piece. Well, what went wrong?

They have contrasting styles. The stocky post excels as the first option on a slowdown team. Remember, in 2006, the Clippers advanced to the second round of the playoffs by getting him the ball on the block.Yet, the 76ers thrived last season when Brand was out and they could use their athleticism to get easy baskets in the open court.

There were other issues besides tempo. Most of us overestimated Philly’s talent and were too quick to proclaim them the fourth best team in the east. Coach Mo Cheeks had lost the team, while Andre Iguodala struggled to live up to his superstar contract.

So, assuming Brand gets healthy for training camp, how do they right the ship?

It starts with getting an identity. New coach Eddie Jordan must pick a style: half-court, fast-break, or a blend of both. Then the sideline boss can settle on a star and co-star. For instance, if Jordan wants to run, Iguodala becomes the focal point with Brand taking on a supporting role.

Next, they need to clarify the one and five spots. For different reasons, Andre Miller an unrestricted free agent, and Samuel Dalembert, a disappointment, aren’t part of the future. Miller, a 32 year old veteran, can’t come to terms on a new contract with management, while Dalembert hasn’t provided a consistent post presence. The new point guard and centre must be able and willing to play the style Jordan selects.

Lou Williams and Thaddeus Young deserve a better environment. Over the last few years, there has been too much controversy and turmoil. Brand, Iguodala, and Jordan must come together, stabilize the organization, and help these young players develop. Smith and Young playing to their potential make the 76ers a far better team.

Trading Brand is possible, but unlikely. The tough economy and falling salary cap make it tough for teams to trade or assume a ’max’ contract, especially if the player is coming off two injury plagued seasons. Also, the club would have to take back a bad contract or two as part of any deal.

There are many concerns in Philadelphia. Figuring out how to make Brand fit is the most important.

With the Princeton offense arriving in Philly; Brand will be better served this season. The other Philly players will have to make the adjustments to a much slower pace. .

Last year I thought brand going to philly would be a home run! I love Elton’s game but he is often injured! I think what they need to do is start Williams,Iguodala, kapono,Brand and Speights! Speights is a better post player reminds me of Al Jefferson. Young would come of the bench with green,Holliday and Dalembert. Dalembert has never been a post player but he can play D and that’s what there gonna need off the bench. Holliday and green can cause havoc in the backcourt while Young can create of the dribble. I think starting Kapono will spread the floor but it will make him accoutable as well! That’s what philly need is to be held accountable because they have a Legit squad. Every play should be a iso to Iguodala if nothing there inside out to brand, if he gets doubled look for kapona, if kapona not open repost Speights if he can’t create a cutting williams should be right there in the lane! Listen there young enough to run they better man up this year with that team! Damn wouldn’t it be nice if odom was there with brand? .

Tough call, Miller has been their leadership for the last 3 years... that role will be hard to fill. Kapono will help spread the floor, because they had NO shooters. But the Brand and Iggy thing needs to get fixed. On paper, they should be pretty great, but they aren’t. The sad part is, if the chemistry is better this year... we are still looking at a 7 or 8 seed, at best. .

Hi Northern Touch ... interesting points! I’m not sure about Kapono. He is an accurate three-point guner and could work with Brand drawing double-teams ( if Elton gets back to being that type of player), but he struggled with Toronto last season. And he could get lost behind Iguodala and Young at the wings. I agree 7th or so is realistic. Thanks for commenting. .

The 76ers have a lot of work to do. Their first problem is they need a point guard. Jrue Holiday is far from being ready to set the table and while Green and Williams are athletic scorers who can get to the net, neither is close to a PG. Secondly I believe they need a mix of both systems. Run when they can, the team is full of explosive athletes; Iggy, Green, Williams, Speights, Young. I think they will be better in the half court this year for two reasons. First Eddie Jordan is talented coach and will utilize players correctly. Secondly, Kapono will be a small addition with a big impact. They were 29th in 3PM and last in 3p% last season. Kapono should be able to spread opposing defenses and keep the lanes open for Brand. I think they’ll find the 7th or 8th seed in the post season. .
