Trade or Buyout? Larry Bird and Indiana Pacers’ options with Jamaal TinsleySeptember 19 08 The evidence suggests GMs aren’t smart. After all, a GM cut Jerome James a six million dollar check for two games work with New York last season. And a GM turned NBA executive sunk Vancouver by handing Bryant Reeves 66 million dollars. Many other examples of GM lunacy exist. Still, most front office suits won’t pay when they can get something free. They know that much. Common sense dictates that Larry Bird, a GM himself, shouldn’t expect equal value for Jamaal Tinsley. After all, the Pacers’ head honcho killed the market for Tinsley by publicly stating that the troubled point guard was no longer welcome in Indiana. To be fair, the Hall of Fame forward made these statements to distance the organization from Tinsley’s off-court behaviour. Such public relations will be costly. Now teams won’t offer equal value and will try to force the Pacers to buyout the 21 million dollars on Tinsley’s deal. He would then become a free agent and only cost another club money. Bird doesn’t want to offer a buyout for two reasons. First, he has issues paying a malcontent to disappear, especially when he gets getting nothing back. Second, Bird, even in the executive chair, is cool under pressure and will wait. In 2006, he didn’t rush to deal Ron Artest after the defender walked-out and somehow turned Jermaine O’Neal into T.J. Ford and Rasho Nesterovic. Of course, Indiana can let Tinsley sit. The newly acquired Ford and Jarrett Jack solidify the one-spot. And, like it or not, expectations are low in the Hoosier state. GMs want the Pacers to buyout Tinsley. Bird wants equal value. Something will give. My money is on Larry-Legend out-waiting his peers and forcing a GM to pay for something that appeared free. Posted by on 09.25.2008 | Bird should call up Donnie Walsh and work out a swap for Zach Randolph. Neither is exactly what the other needs and both have dumb contracts but at least they’d both get something for someone they dont want. . | Posted by prokrastin8ta on 09.22.2008 | Indiana will do just fine without Tinsley. He’s no one special. He has the skills but not the IQ. Let him rot on the bench, have a firesale, or waive him. . | Posted by realist on 09.22.2008 | Bird can’t outwait other GMs, because other GMs aren’t in the picture. No one wants Tinsley. No GM cares if Bird does or does not buy Tinsley out. No GM is under any pressure, except for whatever internal pressure there is on Bird to formally part ways with Tinsley. . | Posted by O. Sandor on 09.21.2008 | Hi Jason, Thanks again for commenting. I’m glad you are all good on my past comment. No insult was meant to radio folks. By the way, I agree with you -radio as a medium is far more interesting and fun than television! Do your thing! As for the Pacers, good points. People are sleeping on their talent. I haven’t seen a ton of Hibbert. However, being a Canadian, with Raptor TV, I saw tons of Ford. He can play. Health is the key. Last year, he was on fire, playing like an All-Star, before getting hurt, then struggled with Calderon taking his job. Ford could really help them this year. So Pacer fans don’t sleep on the on the tiny pg! Thanks for reading and commenting Jason! Out ... . | Posted by Jason Tyler on 09.21.2008 | I am not a big fan of O’Brien, he was alright in Boston, fell apart in Philly, and has crash and burned in Indiana. I think he is part of the problem. Larry Bird is turning into Isaiah Thomas, and I miss Donnie Walsh already. I think staying healthy is a key to making the playoffs, that has killed us the last few seasons. We have enough talent to get as high a 6th seed to be realistic. Staying out of trouble is key. So be honest as of right now there is still alot of questions and if’s about this team and they need to get it together quickly. I could care less what they do with Tinsley, I am sure a team would take him for a second rounder. It’s time to cut your losses with him. I think Roy Hibbert is going to be a key contributor as a rookie, people are sleeping on him. No hard feeling’s Oly, it’s all good, I’m good looking but I just don’t liked being classified in a category that is false . | Posted by jbizzle on 09.21.2008 | Just cut him nobody will take him because he’s awful and no one will give you anything worth a damn anyway . | Posted by Jason Tyler on 09.20.2008 | I happen to like radio better. I have had a few offers for TV. It gets tiring that people consider radio people unattractive, yes many aren’t the greatest looking, but you shouldn’t judge them all. That’s sort of like all bloggers aren’t real writers, it’s not true, but many people say that. . | Posted by on 09.20.2008 | wow, someone has their hanes her ways in a bunch. take a joke. and if you’re as attractive as you say, do tv. you’ll make more money. . | Posted by Jason Tyler on 09.20.2008 | As a radio personality I am highly offended that you portray as ugly. I am also model for Hanes, I am in magazines and billboards all over. Anyway as a Pacers fan I getting rid of Jamaal is key, Shawne Williams is next, we already parted ways with David Harrsion. Bird continues to bring in troubled players, it has been going on for years. He needs to shed this image ASAP. If giving him away is what it takes than do so. We’re fine with the 3 PG’s in Ford, Jack, Diener. . | Posted by O.Sandor on 09.20.2008 | Hi Jason ... Thanks for reading. Thanks for commenting. Sorry to offend radio heads worldwide. LOL. I’ll refer to myself as Gordon Giricek’s twin from now on. Cool? Jason and Pacer fans, get at me with thoughts on this issue. I believe the Pacers can compete for a playoff spot next year. Ford, if he stays healthy is on the verge of being an All-Star, expecially in the point guard starved east. Dunleavy and Granger are very solid. I think DG can really take his game to the next level. And Murphy and Nesterovic are solid. Their bench is decent, too. O’Brien is certainly a player-friendly coach. Two issues worry me. First, they have to rid themselves of Tinsley and Harrison. They must purge all troubled players like the Blazers did. Second, Granger is a NICE player, so they have to re-sign him without a public dispute. A playoff spot at 6th, 7th or 8th out east is very possible, indeed!!! What do you think Pacer fans? Playoff bound? Get at me with thoughts. Thanks for the comment Jason. Out ... . | Posted by O.Sandor on 09.20.2008 | Actually, with this face for radio Reeves shut me down. He has standards, man. . | Posted by adadad on 09.20.2008 | oly sandor talked about his ex-lover bryant reeves again. . | Posted by chiqo on 09.19.2008 | jamaal tinsley sucks. i am contractually obligated to say this whenever and where ever he is mentioned. . | Posted by Larry’s a Loser on 09.19.2008 | Nobody wants him. If Larry wants him gone, the only way that is going to happen is him cutting his losses, and taking a draft pick, or out-right releasing him. Tinsley off the court issues, scare teams away, on top of that Larry showed his hand sayin he doesn’t see Tinsley being on this team. So teams know better than to give in and give equal value for a risky and inconsistent player like Jamaal. Superstars don’t make great coaches or GM’s it’s starting show more and more. Larry Bird stinks, Michael Jordan stinks. Isaiah Thomas Stinks, and the list goes on... . |
