With or Without Agent Zero: Washington Wizards’ Future And Gilbert Arenas

January 13 08

It’s the elephant in the room nobody wants to discuss. Yet the longer we ignore it and stay silent, the more awkward things get.

So forgive me for asking an uncomfortable but inevitable question: are the Washington Wizards better without Gilbert Arenas? Of course, the eccentric superstar has missed most of the season with knee troubles.

I’d say no. Even after the Wizards upset the league-leading Celtics last night. A team can always use their best player.

But Washington, for whatever reason, has better chemistry without Arenas. And good chemistry can compensate for missing talent.

Antonio Daniels has replaced Arenas in the starting five. The veteran does two things for Eddie Jordan’s club. First, he’s a traditional point guard who involves others. Second, he’s an excellent defender.

Daniels’ passing and defense has changed the Wizards. Instead of entertaining with offense, they now spread the ball and get stops.

No Arenas means more Caron Butler and Antawn Jamison. Butler, in particular, has emerged as a legitimate star. The rugged wing is a solid two-way player, capable of scoring and locking down opponents.

Daniels, Butler, and Jamison make the Wizards a more cohesive, functional team. And when Arenas returns -if he’s willing to modify his game- he’ll add to this improved squad.

Of course, when the game is on-the-line, Washington can ask Arenas to revert back to Agent Zero and take the final shot. Elite closers like Gil are scarce.

So there, the elephant in the room has been addressed. The new-look Wizards can certainly find room for a slightly toned-down Arenas. That wasn’t too awkward or uncomfortable.

he makes the team offbalanced , sure hes a great player and clutch performer but that doesnt mean the teams is succelfull , just like kobe in the beggining without shaq the team was unbalnaced now they found their balance with kobe and they are winning games .

Yea Hibachi makes a diffrence, but the reality is his shot attempts are spratic and often out of the play. He is a game changer but not enough consitency to me i mean than posted 60 one night and 0 the next, a year ago. A star should not be held to zero and the bad part was it wasn’t all defense it was poor shooting and not realizing that he was hurting his team. The more he shoots the more he could take his team out the game given that he isn’t hot, extra streaky .

I think GIL is such a talent player that no more than 5 PG are better than him.And such a superman should be took seriously in the team, that will improve everything include the score and winning in hard time.Maybe GIL is just like T-mac,because their team got a better game without them. One can not say T-mac is not important for Huston,so why should we say that to GIL? .

I personally think that GIL is too much of a ballhog.....i mean, yeah is immensely talented, but al those Agent Zero Isolations make the offense stagnant; more so, he doesnt have any conscience at all when it comes to knowing when to stop shooting.....if i was him i’d watch some serious amount of Kb24-games, on how to balance scoring and passing. But i’m guessing thats a no-no for GIL, since he’s to caught up in his own Hibachi-playhouse. (for example, see his infamous 50 point revenge games where he just wont stop shooting - a team can live without that) .
