NCAA Game Summary - Alabama vs. Washington

11.28.2004

Anchorage, AK (Basketball News) - Will Conroy scored 18 points and Nate Robinson was named tournament MVP, as 22nd-ranked Washington beat 18th-ranked Alabama, 79-76, in the final of the Great Alaska Shootout.

Robinson tallied 16 points and hit a three-pointer early in the second half that gave the Huskies (4-0) the lead for good. Bobby Jones and Tre Simmons added 15 points each for Washington, which led by as many as nine points in the final half.

Chuck Davis had 23 points for the Crimson Tide (4-1), who rallied late but had three game-tying attempts come up empty.

Down 77-71 after Jones drained a three-pointer with just over three minutes left, Alabama began its final push. Earnest Shelton hit one-of-two free throws to make it 77-72. Then, following a Conroy basket, Shelton connected on back- to-back layups to get the Tide within 79-76 with 1:45 left.

After a Washington miss, Shelton missed a three-pointer with just over a minute remaining. The Huskies again came up empty at their end and the Tide would get two more chances. First, with 11 seconds left, Chuck Davis missed a short jumper and Kennedy Winston’s desperation three-pointer was off the mark as time expired.

The Tide got the last shot after Robinson was called for traveling when he went to the court to grab a loose ball. However, it was argued that the shot clock expired before the call.

Shelton finished with 17 points for Alabama, which suffered its first loss of the season.

Washington led 36-33 at halftime and extended it lead to 50-41 with 13:21 left on a Hakim Rollins dunk.

The Tide shot 54 percent from the field...Washington hit 45 percent of its attempts...Ronald Steele had 11 points and Winston had 12 for ’Bama.
