NCAA Game Summary - Georgetown at Villanova

01.15.2005

Villanova, PA (Basketball News) - Darrel Owens hit the game-winning free throws with 0.1 seconds remaining to give the Georgetown Hoyas a 66-64 win over the Villanova Wildcats in a Big East thriller from the Pavilion.

After Villanova tied the game on a dunk by Wil Sheridan in the final seconds, Owens charged down the court for a fastbreak layup and drew the foul.

Georgetown (11-4, 3-1 Big East) was led on the day by Jeff Green, who posted a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Brandon Bowman and Ashanti Cook added 11 and 10 points, respectively, as the Hoyas won their second straight game and their seventh out of eight.

Allan Ray scored 17 points to pace Villanova (9-3, 2-2), while Curtis Sumpter posted 14 points and seven rebounds. Mike Nardi chipped in another 12 points for the Wildcats, who lost for the second time in three outings.

Villanova started strong and led by as many as 13 points in the first half, before settling for a 36-27 advantage at the intermission.

Georgetown stormed back to take claim the lead with five minutes remaining, but the Wildcats drew even with at 64-64 with a dunk in the final moments that seemed to send the game into overtime. Owens’ quick thinking and movement down the floor, however, set the stage for his game-winning free throws.
