Oakland, CA (Basketball News) - Baron Davis poured in a career-high 40 points and handed out 13 assists to lead Golden State to a 122-117 win over Houston at The Arena.
Jason Richardson added 20 points for the red-hot Warriors, who extended their season-long winning streak to six games. Golden State, which has also won nine of its last 10 contests, is on the team’s longest winning streak since capturing seven straight from March 15-28 last year.
Troy Murphy and Derek Fisher both scored 15 points in the win.
Tracy McGrady had a game-high 44 points and grabbed seven rebounds for the Rockets, who have dropped three straight games. Houston, which is No. 6 in the Western Conference, now trails the Kings by 1 1/2 games. Sacramento won earlier Tuesday night to increase its advantage.
Yao Ming went for 23 points and 11 rebounds in the setback.
"You have to give them a lot of credit and I’m surprised we didn’t put so much into the game defensively," said Houston head coach Jeff Van Gundy.
Leading 89-84 after three quarters, Adonal Foyle’s basket nearly three minutes into the fourth stretched the Golden State edge to eight points.
The Warriors widened the gap to 105-93 on Zarko Cabarkapa’s bucket moments later and the lead would grow as high as 13 points on Fisher’s basket in the waning minutes.
However, the Rockets did not go away quietly as a pair of free throws by McGrady cut the deficit to 117-111 with 1:10 remaining.
Houston, though, could not get any closer than the final margin.
Golden State led 26-18 after one period, but had its advantage trimmed to 53-50 at halftime.
The Warriors entered the final quarter with an 89-84 lead.
