San Antonio, TX (Basketball News) - Lorenzen Wright hit the winning basket with 17 seconds left to lift the Memphis Grizzlies to an 81-80 win over the Tim Duncan-less San Antonio Spurs at SBC Center.
Wright, who finished with 12 points and six rebounds, put back his own miss, helping the Grizzlies win their second straight and seventh in nine contests.
"I wanted to be aggressive and go after the loose ball and get the rebound," Wright said. "Then the ball ended up in my hands and I went back up strong."
Earl Watson added 13 points off the bench, scoring seven during a key fourth- quarter run, as Memphis beat the Spurs for only the third time in 26 tries.
Hedo Turkoglu led San Antonio with 19 points. Rasho Nesterovic scored 16 of his 18 points in the first half and added 10 rebounds for the Spurs, who are 1-1 without the injured Duncan.
With the Spurs leading 71-57 early in the fourth following a Manu Ginobili three-pointer, the Grizzlies answered with a 19-3 run to take the lead, 76-74. Watson, who scored seven points during the burst, capped the run with a trey with 5:13 left to give Memphis its first lead of the game.
The Grizzlies continued to hold the lead until Bo Outlaw fouled Malik Rose with 1:08 remaining. Rose responded by hitting both of his free throws to give the Spurs an 80-79 edge.
Shane Battier then missed a baseline jumper with 54 seconds left, but after the Spurs turned it over on a shot clock violation, Wright put back his own miss with 19 seconds left to put Memphis on top for good, 81-80.
San Antonio had a chance for the win, but Rose’s driving attempt with two seconds left went off the rim and Memphis corralled the board for the win.
It seemed Ginobili was to take the winning shot, but he couldn’t get free on a drive and kicked it out to Tony Parker, who also couldn’t find an opening. Rose ended up with the ball on the baseline and had to take it to the hole before time expired.
"We couldn’t take decent shots at all in the fourth quarter," Ginobili said.
Rose finished with eight points and 10 rebounds.
Parker had only three points and three assists.
Ginobili had 15 points and nine assists for the Spurs, who had a three-game home winning streak halted. It was also just the third setback for San Antonio in its last 12 games overall.
Duncan is on the injured list with a right knee injury. The Spurs fell to 9-12 all-time without the seven-year veteran in the lineup.
Pau Gasol had 11 points for Memphis.
