01.14.2006

Atlanta, GA (Basketball News) - Gilbert Arenas scored 33 points, including seven in overtime, and grabbed seven rebounds to lead Washington past Atlanta, 114-106, at Philips Arena.

Caron Butler added 23 points and eight boards while Antawn Jamison scored 23 points for the Wizards, who tied their season high by winning for the third straight game. Antonio Daniels contributed a season-high 18 points in the win.

Joe Johnson had 23 points and 11 assists while Salim Stoudamire netted 21 points for the Hawks, who have dropped four straight contests. Josh Childress finished with a season-high 17 points and 12 rebounds in the loss.

In overtime, Childress’ slam with 2:04 remaining gave Atlanta a 104-103 lead, and after each teamed missed once, Arenas then converted a three-point play on a driving layup to put Washington ahead by two with 1:11 to go.

Johnson followed by missing from in close and Arenas was then quickly fouled where the Wizards guard drained a pair to widen the gap to 108-104.

Following a turnover, Daniels then sealed the win with a layup.

Leading by one point after three quarters, the game stayed tight throughout the fourth and Washington held a 97-96 lead with 1:09 left in regulation.

After Arenas was called for a traveling violation, Stoudamire made Washington pay for the turnover as he buried a long three-pointer to give the Hawks a 99-97 lead with 31.5 seconds remaining in the fourth.

Butler then missed a jump hook and Marvin Williams grabbed the rebound, but the Hawks rookie stepped out of bounds as he gained the ball. The Wizards took advantage of the extra possession and Jamison’s basket tied the score with 18 seconds left in regulation.

Johnson then missed a jumper with 2.3 seconds to go, and Jamison’s last-second chance was off the mark, sending the game into overtime.

Washington led 20-17 after one quarter and held a 41-40 halftime edge. The Wizards took a slight 76-75 edge into the final period.

This marked the 18th time this season that Arenas has scored at least 30 points in a game...Washington won three straight games on two other occasions this season...The Hawks have lost eight of 10 games...The Wizards have won seven straight meetings in the series and have scored at least 100 points in the last six matchups with Atlanta.
