Cavs, Wizards resume series in Washington

04.28.2006

(Basketball News) - The Cleveland Cavaliers and Washington Wizards battle in Game 3 of their first-round series tonight at the Verizon Center.

This best-of-seven series is tied at 1-1. Game 4 is scheduled for Sunday at the Verizon Center.

Washington bounced back in Game 2 after losing the series opener, 97-86. On Tuesday, Gilbert Arenas finished with 30 points, six rebounds and six assists, as the Wizards knocked off the Cavaliers, 89-84, at Quicken Loans Arena.

Caron Butler added 21 points and nine boards before fouling out in Game 2s win for the Wizards, who snapped an eight-game franchise losing streak in the second game of a playoff series. Antawn Jamison also contributed 21 points for Washington.

LeBron James tallied 26 points and nine rebounds in the loss for the Cavaliers. James, who recorded a triple-double with 32 points 11 rebounds and 11 assists in Game 1s victory, shot just 7-of-25 from the field and had 10 turnovers in Game 2.

Drew Gooden ended with 24 points and 16 boards in Game 2 for the Cavaliers, while former Wizard Larry Hughes finished with 16 points in defeat.

The Cavaliers have dropped four of their last five Game 3s in the postseason, while Washington has lost two of their last three Game 3s.

Washington and Cleveland have met in the postseason before with the Bullets eliminating the Cavaliers, 2-1, in the first round of the 1976-77 playoffs.

Cleveland has returned to the playoffs for the first time since 1998, when the Cavaliers were ousted in the opening round by the Indiana Pacers, 3-1.

The Wizards are appearing in the playoffs for the second straight season. Washington reached the conference semifinals last season, but was swept by the Miami Heat.

Before last season, the Wizards hadn’t reached the playoffs since losing to Chicago in the first round of the 1996-97 playoffs.

During the regular season, the Wizards won three of the four contests between the clubs.

The Cavaliers were 19-22 as the visitor during the regular season, while the Wizards were 27-14 at home.
