Granger and Indiana down Portland

11.29.2006

Portland, OR (Basketball News) - Danny Granger poured in 21 points off the bench and Jermaine O’Neal scored 20 as Indiana held off Portland, 105-97, at the Rose Garden.

Granger finished 8-of-14 shooting with five rebounds and O’Neal pulled down eight boards and dished out six assists.

Al Harrington and Sarunas Jasikevicius each contributed 17 points and Stephen Jackson donated 15 for the Pacers, who have won four of their last six games.

Indiana shot 52 percent from the floor.

Zach Randolph scored a game-high 30 points on 11-of-27 from the field with 11 rebounds and Jarrett Jack had 21 points and six assists for the Trail Blazers, who have dropped three straight.

Travis Outlaw and Juan Dixon each scored 12 points off the bench in the loss.

Leading 51-46 at halftime, Indiana scored 10 of the first 14 points in the third on two jumpers and a lay-in by O’Neal to go up 61-50 at the 8:40 mark, but the lead didn’t last long. Portland responded with a 19-7 burst over the next six minutes to go up by one, 69-68, capped by Outlaw’s running jumper and highlighted by Randolph’s 10 points.

Jackson then drilled a trey to give the Pacers a 73-69 edge with 1:41 remaining, but six hits from the charity strip by the Trail Blazers, including four from Jack, knotted the contest, 75-75 after three quarters of play.

The Pacers opened the final frame with nine points for an 83-77 advantage, but Dixon drilled a jumper to close the gap to 85-83 with 7:26 left. From that point forward, Indiana gained control with an 11-4 run, and a pair of Granger free throws put his team up by 10 with just under two minutes left in regulation.

Portland finished shooting 39 percent (34-of-87).

O’Neal’s reverse dunk finished a moderate 10-3 spurt by the Pacers early in the first, but the Trail Blazers, down by six with 4:58 left, ended the quarter with a 12-3 run led by Randolph’s six points for a 24-21 edge.

The game remained tight in the second, with each club trading the lead until the Pacers netted five consecutive points, all of which came on free throws by Jamaal Tinsley and Jackson, to break a 46-46 tie in the final 1 1/2 minutes of the half.
