Hawks acquire Harrington from Pacers

07.15.2004

Atlanta, GA (Basketball News) - The Atlanta Hawks acquired forward Al Harrington from the Indiana Pacers on Thursday in exchange for swingman Stephen Jackson.

Last week, the deal was reported by the Indianapolis Star, which said that Jackson was expected to ink a six-year, $44 million contract with Atlanta before he was dealt. The Hawks did not announce on Thursday if Jackson was signed before the trade.

Harrington, 24, spent the first six years of his NBA career with the Pacers, posting averages of 10.1 points and 5.3 rebounds over 354 games. He averaged career-highs of 13.3 points and 6.4 boards last season, as he finished second to Antawn Jamison in the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year voting.

"This was a great opportunity to continue improving our roster and Al adds a great deal of size and experience to our young club," said general manager Billy Knight. "In 1998, I participated in the discussion to select him in the Draft, so I am very familiar with his abilities. He will give us tremendous options at both forward positions, and he excels at putting the ball on the floor and creating his own shot."

The 26-year-old Jackson had a career year in 2003-04, his only campaign with the Hawks. He averaged 18.1 points, 4.6 rebounds and 3.1 assists over 80 games. He has also enjoyed stints with New Jersey and San Antonio during his four-year NBA career.
