Jazz trying to stay at top of Northwest

01.24.2007

(Basketball News) - The Utah Jazz (28-14) own a 4 1/2 game lead over the second place Denver Nuggets in the Northwest Division. The Jazz have no time to relax with the return of Denver’s Carmelo Anthony, who is teaming with Allen Iverson to give the Nuggets a potent one-two punch.

Utah is 23-6 when it scores 100 or more points this season. The Jazz have not reached the century mark in their last five contests.

The Jazz try to extend their winning streak to five games when they host the Memphis Grizzlies on Wednesday at EnergySolutions Arena. It is the second meeting of the season between the clubs. On December 23rd, Carlos Boozer poured in 24 points, pulled down 11 rebounds and dished out five assists to lead Utah past Memphis, 100-97, at FedExForum.

The Grizzlies have lost six of nine and eight of their last 12 at Utah.

Utah plays the middle contest of a three-game homestand against the Grizzlies. Mehmet Okur scored 28 points, as the Jazz topped Northwest Division-rival Minnesota, 106-91, on Monday at EnergySolutions Arena.

Deron Williams posted 21 points and a career-high tying 15 assists in the win over the Timberwolves for the Jazz, who have won four in a row after a four- game losing streak. Boozer scored 18 points and Matt Harpring netted 11 off the bench in the victory.

The Jazz are 15-4 at home this season. They will host Anthony and the Nuggets on Friday in the finale of the current homestand. Utah defeated Denver, 96-84, on January 6th at the Pepsi Center. Denver has lost two straight and four of its last five at Utah.

Boozer leads the Jazz in scoring (22.1 ppg) and rebounding (11.8 pg), while Williams has dished out a team-high 8.8 assists per game.
