Johnson leads Hawks over Magic

01.29.2007

Atlanta, GA (Basketball News) - Joe Johnson poured in 34 points, scoring 11 during a key fourth-quarter run, to lead the Atlanta Hawks over the Orlando Magic, 93-83, at Philips Arena.

Josh Smith added 19 points and 12 rebounds for Atlanta, which used an 18-4 fourth-quarter run to build a 20-point cushion. Tyronn Lue tallied 13 points and seven assists and Marvin Williams had 12 points for the Hawks, winners in three of their last four contests.

Grant Hill had 21 points to lead the Magic, who have dropped three straight and eight of nine. Jameer Nelson added 16 points and Dwight Howard had 15 points and seven boards for Orlando, which hit just 1-of-9 three-pointers compared to 7-of-14 shooting from beyond the arc for the Hawks.

The Hawks scored 12 of the first 15 points of the game and were rarely threatened after that. Lue’s three-pointer gave Atlanta a 12-3 lead. Williams’ bucket with five minutes left in the opening quarter gave the Hawks a 10-point cushion, 21-11.

Orlando managed to draw within 28-21 by the end of one and then made it 35-31 midway through the second. Atlanta, though, kept the Magic at bay, extending to a 43-35 lead when Johnson hit 1-of-2 free throws with a little more than 2 1/2 minutes to play in the first half.

The Hawks went into the locker room with a 48-41 edge and pulled away in the third. Smith’s bucket 4 1/2 minutes into the half extended Atlanta’s lead to 10 points, 57-47, and later Johnson drained a three-pointer to give the Hawks a 71-58 advantage heading into the fourth.

In the fourth, ahead 71-65, Atlanta went on an 18-4 run to put the game away. Johnson had 11 points during the surge, capping it with a three-pointer for an 89-69 lead with over three minutes to play.

Orlando made it interesting down the stretch, drawing within eight points, 89-81, on a Hedo Turkoglu bucket with a minute to play, but that was as close as it got.
