Kings pick up option on Adelman

02.2.2005

Sacramento, CA (Basketball News) - The Sacramento Kings exercised their one- year option on head coach Rick Adelman Tuesday, keeping him under contract through the 2005-06 season.

Adelman has enjoyed a very successful run in seven seasons in Sacramento. The Kings are 30-14 this season and in second place in the Pacific Division. He is 331-173 as the Kings mentor and is the winningest coach in franchise history.

The Kings went to the Western Conference finals in 2002, but have been knocked out of the playoffs in the second round each of the past two seasons.

"Rick has enjoyed tremendous success as head coach of the Kings," said owner Joe Maloof. "We look forward to continued success."

Adelman has coached 15 seasons in the NBA, including stints with Portland and Golden State. His career mark is 688-425. He led Portland to the NBA Finals in 1990 and 1992, but the Trail Blazers lost to the Pistons and Bulls, respectively.

"Sometimes I think Rick doesn’t get the recognition he deserves for the job he has done here in Sacramento," said president of basketball operations Geoff Petrie.
