Mavs, Johnson close to new deal

04.6.2005

Dallas, TX (Basketball News) - The Dallas Mavericks and head coach Avery Johnson are apparently closing in on a deal that could keep him in the Lone Star State for the next four years.

The Dallas Morning News reported that the two sides have agreed in principle and a deal could be announced within days.

"We got everything we wanted," Johnson told the paper. "We agree on the major points. And we hope to have something in writing by the end of the week."

The new contract has three years guaranteed, with the fourth guaranteed as long as certain goals, such as an NBA Finals appearance or reaching the Western Conference Finals twice, are met. He is expected to be paid the average salary for an NBA coach, roughly $2.5 million.

Also, according to the report, Johnson’s representatives stated that the coach has received a bonus for the rest of this season. Depending on how far the Mavs go in the playoffs, his $1.1 million salary could double.

Johnson, who retired as a player in training camp, was named Dallas’ eighth head coach in franchise history back on March 19 following the sudden resignation of Don Nelson, whom he had served as an assistant.

Following Tuesday’s 114-105 win over the Orlando Magic, the Mavericks are 8-2 since Johnson’s promotion and 50-24 for the season, good enough for fourth place in the Western Conference.
