Breaking Down Rumors: Did Mark Cuban Block The Golden State Warriors From Landing Kevin Garnett?

July 17 07

Tim Kawakami on the Warriors trying to acquire Kevin Garnett:

Mullin and Timberwolves executive Kevin McHale are secretive guys, but I’m pretty sure some word of this would’ve gotten out to other NBA execs, coaches, agents or players. I’ve checked: No such word.

It’s just the opposite: Those who should know say there’s no deal. Yet.

I’ve heard from several sources that Mullin and McHale were on the brink of making the deal on draft night but something happened to halt the process.

Now both sides need time to rethink the whole thing (does Minnesota want Andris Biedrins? Would Mullin include him? Could Boston get back into it? Chicago?).

Once the adrenaline of draft night vanished and Mullin accepted that he had to move Jason Richardson without knowing if he would end up with Garnett, the likely KG time frame transitioned to September, October or even February.

My Quick Take: I agree with Kawakami. The Minnesota Timberwolves almost traded Kevin Garnett to the Golden State Warriors on draft night. Here’s the question: who prevented this trade from happening?

Mark Cuban, perhaps?

Cuban, Dallas’ owner, has expressed interest in acquiring Garnett. Cuban has also expressed interest in settling the score with former employee, Don Nelson. The two have been locked in a messy lawsuit because Cuban believes Nelson is still under contract with Dallas

Of course, Nelson is Golden State’s coach. And his Warriors eliminated the Mavericks from last year’s playoffs. This point wasn’t lost on Cuban. Not for a second. He has a giant axe to grind with Nelson and the entire Golden State franchise.

Around draft day, Dallas suddenly became involved in the Garnett sweepstakes. And Cuban’s offer of Josh Howard and Devin Harris could have been enough to prevent or delay Wolves’ GM Kevin McHale from trading the superstar to Nelson’s Warriors.

McHale would have to think about and consider Dallas’ offer. This would have shifted momentum away from the Warriors’ offer and maybe even killed the deal. What other explanation is there for Garnett not ending up in San Francisco?

There’s no way to know if Cuban intentionally tried to prevent Golden State from acquiring Garnett. His interest in the superstar may have been legitimate. But he certainly had the motive to disrupt Golden State’s plans.

And if Dallas lands the Big Ticket, Cuban gets the last laugh on Nelson and the Warriors.

T.O. is a baller on the court. But he’s a top 5 WR in the NFL make $25 million big faces, why leave americas team? I heard that report last night as well, T.O. was asked what he thought about the Mavericks because he seems to be more a Heat supporter, and he said "the Mavs have a god squad, but they could use a player like me to come off the bench and provide a different look. I would have loved to play for their summer league and even get a tryout with the team. But I might pursue it in the future when my football days are over". T.O. is like 33, he’s already so beat up from football, that he’ll get schooled on the court. T.O. dawg U NEED 2 FOCUS ON CATCHING FOOTBALLS AND NOT DROPPING THEM. You’re probably the type of player with no handles. As for this article, I don’t think MC tried to block a trade just cuz the warriors want KG, I think Cuban has always had some interest in KG, TMAC and Shaq. And if their on the block that he’d strongly consider them, every hoops decision maker should, I’m Out! .

Yeah.. Cuban sure got the last laugh.. hahah He stopped a trade the Twolves never intended to make.. The Wolves owner has said the Celtics were the team closest to getting the trade done.. so there goes your theory.Cuban knows even less about basketball than he does relaity TV shows. I like how he wants to buy the Cubs now.. he has nothing left to do with the Mavs.. he already F’ed them up beyond belief. He loses Nash and Nellie.. his work is done! haha The longer Nellie is away form the Mavs the worse they are going to get. I bet they don’t even make the playoffs next season. .

I just heard a report that T.O. said he wants to try out for the Mavs. That’s funny as hell. Why would T.O. quit football to play basketball. The NFL is the best! .

Yes he is smart but he is also a Big B-I-T-C-H. Every time they lose he has a excuse-Look man-mark my words-no matter how much you blame the REFS,DON NELSON,And all the other countless gripes-DIRK is NOT A MVP and will never WIN a title in Dallas any time soon, He never plays like one(mvp)-when it matters-the Proof is in the pudding-look at the last four years in the games that mattered. So stop all the nonsense-Because Tuthfully if KG went to Dallas-KG would be my #1 option-and your coaches wouldnt do that to dirk-therefore no CHAMPIONSHIP-isnt this the same owner who got rid of STEVE-NASH, YOU might would have a title by now-DUMB -A_S_S. .

Regardless Cuban was or wasn’t involved in the KG trade one thing is sure...the Golden State shouldn’t give up one of their key players. Garnett’s trade was always only a plan or a rumor so before GS’s traded J-Rich they shuold have had dead certainty that KG will be a Warrior. I was very excited that they made the playoffs & I was counting on them to beat the Mavs. Now they don’t have Garnett & Richardson either. Ihope thet they won’t have to wait another decade to clinch the playoffs. Yet I’m looking forward to see their success. .

Do you smoke a lot of crack? How on earth could Cuban stop a trade? Your article makes zero sense.. you have nothing to support this hairbrained guess.. if Cuban couldn’t stop Nellie form kicking Avery’s butt on the court with the league MVP what makes you think he could pull off soemthing like this? Cuban can’t even get his own team straightened out let alone stop another deal from happening.. .
