NBA Game Summary - Dallas at New Jersey

03.19.2006

East Rutherford, NJ (Basketball News) - Richard Jefferson scored 28 points on 11-of-16 shooting to help lead the New Jersey Nets past the Dallas Mavericks, 100-89, at Continental Airlines Arena.

Nenad Krstic added 18 points and 13 rebounds for the Nets, who won their fifth straight game overall. Vince Carter also turned in a solid game with 23 points and six rebounds as New Jersey concluded a three-game homestand undefeated.

The win snapped the Nets 11-game losing streak to Dallas.

"For us, it was just maintain what we had been doing the last four games," said New Jersey’s Jason Kidd.

Dirk Nowitzki netted a game-high 37 points on 14-of-28 shooting for the Mavericks, who had a three-game winning streak halted. Overall, it was just Dallas’ second loss in its last eight games.

Rawle Marshall was the only other Maverick in double figures with 10 points.

"We just couldn’t get anything going," said Nowitzki. "We turned the ball over. Really that is where we lost the game."

New Jersey dominated the opening frame as Dallas struggled to hit shots. The Mavericks netted just 10 points, a season low for a quarter, in the first stanza, shooting a horrid 4-of-22 from the floor. Nowitzki finished the quarter 1-for-8 shooting.

"We did a good job early on Dirk," Jefferson said. "It was just a matter of trying to contain him."

The Nets used an 11-0 run to hold an 18-4 lead with 4:32 left in the first and later extended to a 29-10 edge heading into the second. New Jersey countered Dallas’ poor shooting percentage by hitting on 12-of-25 from the floor with Jefferson netting 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting.

It was much of the same in the second as a Jefferson jumper with just under three minutes left extended the Nets to a 25-point advantage, 49-24. New Jersey led 53-32 at the half.

Jefferson finished the first half with 17 points while Krstic had 12 points and nine rebounds.

Nowitzki faired a little better in the second quarter, hitting on three of his five shots while finishing the opening 24 minutes with a team-high nine points. Dallas as a team shot at just a 28.6 percent clip in the first two quarters, while the Nets hit on 51.1 percent of their attempts.

The Mavericks tried to get back into the game in the third as a Nowitzki jumper cut the deficit to 14, 64-50, with 4:12 remaining in the frame. However, the Nets ran off six straight after that to extend back to a 20-point lead. New Jersey led 77-61 after the quarter.

Nowitzki then netted seven points in a row for Dallas to pull the Mavericks to within 83-72 with 7:07 left in the fourth. However, the Nets responded with an 11-0 burst to retake control at 94-72 with 3:40 remaining.

Dallas though, had one more big run left in it. Two Marshall free throws with 3:31 left started a 15-0 Maverick run that spanned three minutes and was capped by a Darrell Armstrong layup to make it 94-87.

The Mavericks then started sending the Nets to the free throw line, but New Jersey was good on all six of its attempts down the stretch to seal the win.

Kidd added 15 points and nine assists and passed Albert King for eighth place on New Jersey’s all-time scoring list. King netted 5,595 points in his career with the Nets. Kidd now has 5,607 points...Carter recorded his 47th 20-plus game scoring...Dallas never led in the contest...Jason Terry and Jerry Stackhouse both finished with eight points for Dallas.
