NBA Game Summary - Seattle at Memphis

11.8.2005

Memphis, TN (Basketball News) - Pau Gasol and Shane Battier each scored 20 points to lead the Memphis Grizzlies over the Seattle SuperSonics, 94-69, in dominating fashion at FedEx Forum.

Mike Miller added 14 points off the bench on 6-of-11 shooting and Eddie Jones had 10 points for the Grizzlies, who won for the third time in four games this season. Lorenzen Wright led the team in rebounds with 11.

Memphis snapped an overall six-game losing streak against Seattle with the win and beat the SuperSonics for the first time at home in their last six tries.

Ray Allen paced Seattle with 15 points and Rashard Lewis recorded a double- double with 13 points and 10 rebounds for the SuperSonics, who have lost twice in three games to open the season.

Reggie Evans pulled down 12 rebounds in the loss. Seattle only shot 32.9 percent from the field. Memphis, however, converted at a 49.3 clip from the floor.

The two teams stayed close through much of the opening quarter and the SuperSonics held a 15-12 lead with just under five minutes left in the frame. The Grizzlies would then use a 12-0 run that included a trio of three-point field goals in a row — two by Miller — that staked Memphis to a 24-15 lead with 1:19 left in the stanza.

However, Seattle cut it to four by the end of the quarter after a three-point basket by Vladimir Radmanovic and two free throws by Damien Wilkins.

Lewis’ jumper with 7:36 remaining in the second quarter tied the game at 31-31, but Battier’s layup would later give Memphis a 37-33 edge with 3:11 left in the half. Evans would tie the game again at 37-37 with two free throws, but Gasol would score the final four points of the quarter and the Grizzlies held a 41-37 lead at halftime.

A 10-2 run would give Memphis a 52-42 advantage with 7:36 to go in the third frame and the Grizzlies would close out the stanza on another 10-2 run, which included four points by Gasol and a three-pointer from Jones, to take a 68-51 lead into the fourth quarter.

Memphis outscored Seattle 27-14 in the third frame to build its lead.

The Grizzlies kept pouring it on in the fourth quarter and Miller’s basket 3:36 into the stanza made it a 78-55 game. Later on, Jones would nail a three pointer and a jumper, sandwiched around a Wilkins basket, to extend Memphis’ lead to 83-63 with 3:43 left in the game.

The home team would close out the game on a 7-3 run to account for the final score.

Memphis is now 2-1 at home, while Seattle played for the first time on the road this season...The Sonics lead the all-time series with the Memphis/Vancouver franchise, 33-6...Last season against Seattle, Memphis set a franchise record by scoring 42 points in the second quarter of a 118-113 loss.
