NBA Game Summary - Washington at Portland

03.29.2005

Portland, OR (Basketball News) - Gilbert Arenas scored 28 points and Etan Thomas pulled down 14 rebounds to go along with 10 points in Washington’s 114-106 victory over Portland at the Rose Garden.

"Gilbert Arenas is a star," said Portland coach Kevin Pritchard. "His dribble drive and penetration gave Sebastian (Telfair) a lot of trouble. We just did a poor job against penetration."

Larry Hughes added 25 points, five rebounds and five assists for the Wizards, who finished a five-game Western road trip with three wins.

"I’m proud of my team. We took care of business on this road trip," said Wizards head coach Eddie Jordan.

Shareef Abdur-Rahim led the Trail Blazers with 19 points. Joel Przybilla had 10 rebounds and Richie Frahm ended with a season-high 16 points for Portland, which has lost eight of its last nine games. Telfair had 17 in the loss.

The Trail Blazers led by four after the first quarter, but Arenas drove to the basket and dropped in a layup to give Washington a 39-37 lead with 4:30 left in the second quarter. The Wizards, who would not trail again, were in front, 51-44, at the break.

The Wizards’ lead grew to 15 after a free throw by Hughes with 5:11 remaining in the third quarter. Portland would get within seven on several occasions, but no closer.

Darius Miles scored 13 of his 15 points in the first half to help the Blazers stay close. Washington, however, took advantage of nine turnovers and went 9- of-13 from the free throw line before the break.

"Very important win for us," said Arenas. "We won again. It’s a great feeling going 3-2 on this trip."

Washington, which was 0-of-5 from beyond the arc in the first half, finished 2-of-11 on three-pointers...Portland was 7-of-13 from three-point range...The Wizards ended 30-of-41 from the free throw line, while Portland was just 13- of-23 from the stripe...The Blazers were outrebounded, 45-35.
