Celtics sign Barros for rest of the regular season

Boston, MA (Basketball News) - The Boston Celtics signed guard Dana Barros and forward Ernest Brown for the remainder of the regular season, which ends Wednesday with a home game versus Atlanta.

To make room for the two players, the Celtics placed guards Paul Pierce and Kendrick Perkins on the injured list for the regular season-finale. Pierce is suffering from a right ankle sprain, but will be available for the playoffs, as will Perkins, who has been bothered by flu-like symptoms. Boston will be the eighth seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs, which begin this weekend.

In 80 games this season, Pierce averaged a team-high 23.0 points, 6.5 rebounds and 5.1 assists per contest.

Barros, who retired following the 2001-2002 season, has served as an assistant coach with the Celtics for the last two months. After suiting up for several practices, Barros regained the desire to play competitively. The 13-year NBA veteran has averaged 10.5 points, 3.3 assists and 1.9 rebounds in stints with Seattle, Philadelphia, Boston and Detroit.

A Boston native, Barros played 306 games for the Celtics between the 1995-96 season and the 1999-2000 campaign and averaged 10.1 points and 3.3 assists.

The 6-11 Brown, who was originally drafted by Miami in the 2000 draft, played in nine games with the Fayatteville Patriots of the NBDL this season and averaged 14.8 points and 9.0 rebounds.
