Golden State Warriors 2006 Draft Preview

06.22.2006

(Basketball News) - The 2005-06 season started off great for the Golden State Warriors, who won 12 of their first 18 games and looked like they were going to have a serious chance of making it back to the playoffs for the first time since 1994.

However, it was not meant to be. Golden State started to lose games in bunches and finished the campaign with a disappointing 34-48 record.

Golden State has a lot of talent. Baron Davis and Jason Richardson makeup a dynamic backcourt, while Ike Diogu, Mike Dunleavy and Troy Murphy are solid forwards. Guards Derek Fisher and Mickael Pietrus and centers Adonal Foyle and Andris Biedrins give the Warriors depth.

Richardson led the Warriors in scoring (23.2 ppg), while Murphy was the team’s top rebounder (10.0 rpg) and Davis dished out a team-best 8.9 assists per game. Davis also averaged 17.9 points per game and Murphy netted 14.0 per contest.

The twenty-five-year-old Dunleavy registered 11.5 points per game in his fourth year in the league, while rookie Ike Diogu averaged 7.0 points and 3.3 boards in 69 games.

The Warriors own the ninth overall pick and could be thinking about moving the pick along with a player for a veteran who can make an immediate impact. Dunleavy has not developed into the player Golden State had hoped he would be at this point of his career, and a change of scenery could be beneficial for everyone.

Golden State needs to become a playoff team now. The Warriors have an excellent backcourt and need to find the right mix to go along with Davis and Richardson. Draft day could be very interesting for Warriors’ fans.

Key Player(s): Andris Biedrins (Center), Baron Davis (Guard), Ike Diogu (Forward), Mike Dunleavy (Forward), Derek Fisher (Guard), Adonal Foyle (Center), Troy Murphy (Forward), Mickael Pietrus (Guard), Jason Richardson (Guard).

Team Needs: Rebounding and outside shooting.

Draft picks: 1st round (9th overall), 2nd round (38th overall).
