General manager John Weisbrod also announced that assistant Chris Jent will serve as head coach on an interim basis. In addition, the team also released assistant coach Ron Ekker.
"We will continue to do everything possible to make this team better and feel at this time that we need a new voice and direction," Weisbrod said in a release. "The organization is grateful to Johnny for his work and loyalty, and I wish he and his family the best."
The Magic are currently tied for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference with the Philadelphia 76ers. Both teams are 31-33.
Davis was named the sixth head coach in franchise history on November 17, 2003 and finished with a 51-84 record. The former NBA player owns an overall head coaching mark of 73-144, including one season with Philadelphia (1996-97).
Jent, meanwhile, joined the Magic as an assistant last summer. A member of the 1993-94 NBA Champion Houston Rockets, Jent spent the 2003-04 season with the 76ers as assistant coach/player development.
"In a relatively short period of time as part of our organization, Chris has earned a great deal of respect," said Weisbrod. "He brings a great work ethic, excellent X’s and O’s knowledge, and has been a part of winning teams as a player."
Jent will make his debut Friday, March 18, against the Seattle SuperSonics.
