Maverick deal: Walker to Atlanta, Terry to Dallas

08.4.2004

Dallas, TX (Basketball News) - The Dallas Mavericks traded All-Star forward Antoine Walker and guard Tony Delk to the Atlanta Hawks on Wednesday. In exchange, Dallas will receive guard Jason Terry, forward Alan Henderson and a 2007 first-round pick.

The Mavericks had recently been trying to package Walker, who was in the final year of a contract. A three-time All-Star selection, Walker spent just one season in Dallas after being acquired in a trade on October 20, 2003 from Boston.

The 27-year-old Walker averaged a career-low 14.0 points last year while grabbing 8.3 rebounds and handing out 4.5 assists per game.

Walker never seemed to fit into Dallas’ fast-tempo offense that also featured the explosiveness of players like Dirk Nowitzki, Michael Finley and Steve Nash.

The Kentucky product began his playing days in Boston where he spent his first seven seasons after being selected with the sixth overall pick in the 1996 NBA Draft. Walker has posted 19.9 points, 8.6 boards and 4.2 assists in 610 career games, which also included three appearances in the playoffs.

In Delk, the Hawks get an eight-year NBA veteran who has also spent time with the Hornets, Golden State Warriors, Sacramento Kings, Phoenix Suns and Boston Celtics.

The 30-year-old Delk, who, along with Walker, was acquired by Dallas in October 2003, averaged 6.0 points and 1.8 rebounds last year after playing only 33 games due to injury for the Mavericks.

Dallas, which was in need of guard help after Nash was signed by the Suns in the off-season, gets a proven scorer in Terry and someone who can fill the void in the backcourt if he remains with the Mavericks.

It had been discussed that Dallas owner Mark Cuban was interested in obtaining All-Star point guard Jason Kidd, who has five years and $90 million left on his current deal with New Jersey. However, the Nets were not ready to part ways with Kidd and he also has not yet demanded a trade.

It is still a possibility, though, that Terry might be involved in a deal for Kidd, especially if Kidd fully recovers from off-season knee surgery.

Terry, a five-year veteran, scored 16.8 points, dished out 5.4 assists and grabbed 4.1 rebounds while playing 81 games last year. The 26-year-old, who played collegiately at Arizona, has averaged 16.2 points while contributing 5.5 assists and 3,6 rebounds in 401 career contests.

Henderson had spent his entire nine-year career with the Hawks and has totaled 9.4 points and 5.5 rebounds.
