Donnie Walsh Aiming for LeBron James?

04.4.2008 - Updated on 04.4.2008

Walsh was short on specifics, but he set out some goals. He said he wanted the Knicks to become competitive in the short term, and to get under the salary cap in the next two to three years.

Walsh seemed to be eyeing the summer of 2010, when LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh can become free agents. But creating cap space will require the Knicks to essentially stop spending for the next two years. It could also limit Walsh’s ability to make trades.

The Knicks have not been under the salary cap in more than a decade. Having the chance to sign a major free agent “would be a monstrous thing for this franchise,” Walsh said. “You can turn something over overnight in a lot of ways if you can manage the cap the right way now.” [NY Times]
