Jalen Rose finally a Raptor

12.1.2003

Chicago, IL (Basketball News) - The Chicago Bulls on Monday dealt swingman Jalen Rose and forwards Donyell Marshall and Lonny Baxter to the Toronto Raptors.

In exchange, Chicago acquired center Antonio Davis and forwards Jerome Williams and Chris Jefferies.

Rose, who is in his 10th NBA season, is averaging 13.3 points, 4.0 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game this year. The 30-year-old Rose has been in Chicago since the 2001-02 season, when he was obtained from Indiana on February 19, 2002.

"We are excited with the new additions to our team and look forward to their contributions both on the court and in the community," said Glen Grunwald, Raptors senior vice-president and general manager. "Jalen Rose has proven to be an excellent player in this league and will provide us with some valuable offensive tools. Donyell Marshall gives us another forward who can contribute points and rebounds. Lonny Baxter is a young player who we believe can develop into a consistent inside presence."

A Michigan product, Rose was selected by the Denver Nuggets in the first round (13th pick overall) of the 1994 NBA Draft before he was traded to Indiana, where he was with the Pacers for five-plus seasons. In 691 career games, Rose has averaged 14.4 points, 4.1 assists and 3.6 rebounds per contest.

Rose was reportedly ticked off earlier this season by being labeled as a scapegoat for early season losses, and was pulled out of the starting lineup of a November 8 game against New Orleans by former head coach Bill Cartwright.

Marshall, who is in his 10th professional season, is averaging 8.7 points and 6.2 rebounds this season for Chicago. The Connecticut product is playing for his fourth team as he also had stints with Minnesota, Golden State and Utah.

The 24-year-old Baxter, who is in his second NBA season, has posted career averages of 4.7 points and 2.9 rebounds in 69 games.

Williams, 30, played for the Raptors since 2000-01 and averaged 5.1 points and 8.5 rebounds per outing in 15 games this year for Toronto. The eight- year veteran began his career in Detroit after being chosen with the 26th overall pick in the 1996 draft.

The 35-year-old Davis was first drafted by Indiana in 1990, but did not play until the 1993-94 campaign. Davis spent six years with the Pacers before he was shipped to Toronto, where he had been since 1999-2000. For his career, Davis has posted 10.7 points and 7.7 rebounds per game.

Jefferies, 23, is averaging 4.0 points this season. In his second season out of Fresno State, Jefferies has career totals of 3.9 points and 1.1 rebounds.

"This trade helps us address a couple of different areas, areas that we needed to get stronger in. It not only provides us with size, but also with energy," said Bulls executive vice president of basketball operations John Paxson.
