Jerry Sloan’s wife loses battle with cancer

06.18.2004

Salt Lake City, UT (Basketball News) - The wife of Utah Jazz head coach Jerry Sloan died Friday from cancer at the age of 61.

Bobbye Sloan, the coach’s wife of 41 years, announced in January she had a malignant tumor in her pancreas, unrelated to the breast cancer she was treated for several years ago.

Over the past several months, Bobbye fought a courageous battle with liver and pancreatic cancer.

Jerry Sloan has guided the Jazz since assuming the reins from former head coach Frank Layden on December 9, 1988. Sloan is the franchise’s winningest coach and has the longest active tenure with one team in the NBA.

During his stay, Utah has made two NBA Finals appearances (1997 and 1998) and has captured five Midwest Division titles.
